Acquisition and characteristics
  • The screw was powered by a single steam engine which could operate as either a high-pressure or low-pressure engine.
    • "driven by" instead of "powered by"?
  • The vessel had an average speed of 8 knots and a maximum speed of 15 knots.
    • Repetition of "speed"; perhaps "...had an average speed of 8 knots and a maximum of 15 knots"?
  • The commercial screw steamer Tonawanda was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1863, by the C. H. & W. H. Cramp yard, and was originally based out of that city.
    • Do we need the comma after 1863?
  • Could we have the conversion parameters for both $98,000 and $40,100?
West Gulf Blockading Squadron
  • "to enable the latter vessels to be other duties" → "to enable the latter vessels to perform other duties"
  • Under the command of Acting Volunteer Lieutenant William H. West, Arkansas was assigned to the West Gulf Blockading Squadron, to which organization she reported on 10 October 1863.
    • Do we need "to which organization she reported" after "was assigned to"?
      • I think so - she presumably didn't report to the WGBS the same day she was assigned there, due to the need to go from the east coast to the Gulf. Hog Farm Talk 02:51, 9 June 2026 (UTC)
Postwar fate
  • while bringing a cargo of fish and potatoes to Havana, Tonawanda ran aground on the Elbow Reef.
    • How about "carrying a cargo" instead of "bringing a cargo"?

    • While on a supply mission, Arkansas, by then under the command of Acting Volunteer Lieutenant David Cate, met the schooner Watchful with a cargo of lumber and petroleum in the Gulf of Mexico on 27 September 1864. But the source says "David Gate".
    • stating that it was "destitute of all the elements of prize."[5] I couldn't find the quote.

@MSincccc: - Not entirely for sure what happened wit the "destitute of all the elements of prize" bit; I've removed it. While it is an actual quote from the Supreme Court decision, I'm not seeing it get picked up in secondary sources. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas uses "Cate", which I think is the correct name (see also https://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2020633511/ this from the Library of Congress]; I've switched which source is cited to use the Encyclopedia of Arkansas to support the Cate name.
