Tangled is an upcoming American musical fantasy comedy film directed by Michael Gracey from a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor, and produced by Kristin Burr and Michael De Luca. It is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 2010 animated film Tangled, which itself is loosely based on the 1812 fairy tale "Rapunzel" by the Brothers Grimm. The film stars Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel, Caitríona Balfe as Queen Arianna, and Elliot Cowan as King Frederic. Diego Luna also stars.

Production
Development
In May 2020, Hannah Shaw-Williams of Screen Rant asked whether the success of the movie would lead to a sequel (apart from the short film Tangled Ever After), stating there is no word of it being in active development, while also stating that Disney "is developing a live-action movie about Rapunzel", and stating that it would take several years for a possible movie to reach theatres.[2] The latter was confirmed to be in development in December 2024, with The Walt Disney Company wanting Baz Luhrmann as director of the film.[3] Later, Michael Gracey signed on to direct the film with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson writing the screenplay.[4] In April 2025, it was announced that Disney had paused development, due to the underwhelming box office performance of Snow White (2025).[5]
Development resumed in October 2025.[6] In March 2026, Michael Montemayor joined the film as a co-writer.[7][8][9][10] In April, Erik Wilson joined as cinematographer.[11][12][better source needed]
Casting
Prior to the project's shutdown, Florence Pugh and Scarlett Johansson had reportedly been offered the lead roles of Rapunzel and Mother Gothel.[13] Additionally, Gigi Hadid and Jojo Siwa had auditioned for Rapunzel,[14][15] while Corey Mylchreest auditioned for Flynn Rider.[16]
By October 2025, Johansson was still in talks to play Mother Gothel.[6][17] By December, Johansson had passed on the film due to her commitments to the films The Exorcist: Martyrs (2027) and The Batman: Part 2 (2028).[18] That same month; Freya Skye, Sarah Catherine Hook, Teagan Croft and Olivia-Mai Barrett had screen tested for Rapunzel, while Milo Manheim, Charlie Gillespie and Gilli Jones had screen tested for Flynn Rider, respectively. Lola Tung was offered a screen-test, but had to turn it down due to other commitments.[19] In January 2026, it was announced that Croft and Manheim were cast as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider,[20] with Kathryn Hahn being in talks to join the cast as Mother Gothel.[21] Hahn was later confirmed in March.[22][23] In May, Diego Luna joined the cast.[24] In July 2026, it was revealed that Patrick and Hugo McPherson were cast as the Stabbington Brothers.[25] In August 2026, Caitríona Balfe and Elliot Cowan were revealed to have joined the cast as Queen Arianna and King Frederic.[26]
Filming
Principal photography began in Spain, specifically in Alicante, Valencian Community,[27] from June 24, 2026, to June 30, in the cities of Catalonia; Tarragona from July 1 to July 10, and in Girona from July 13 to August 3.[28][29] Filming is also taking place in Burgos, Castile and León,[30] and Álava, Basque Country.[31][32][33]
