Baraboo Valley League/Valley-Ridge Athletic Conference

Just when I thought I had southern Wisconsin pretty much done, I've uncovered a new conference that looks like it was around from 1928 to 1935 (estimated based on information found). It was first known as the Baraboo Valley League, and consisted of four schools (Cazenovia, LaValle, Lime Ridge and North Freedom), and North Freedom were titlists for boys basketball in 1929.

I didn't see any news about the conference in my search on Newspapers.com between 1929 to 1934, but I found references to a "new" conference called the Valley-Ridge Athletic Conference with the same four schools as those that were in the Baraboo Valley:

As with the Baraboo Valley, all news on the Valley-Ridge seems to have stopped after 1935 per Newspapers.com. I would assume that the conference disbanded for the 1935-36 school year, especially since three of the four schools (all but LaValle) joined the Wisconsin River League in the period between 1936 to 1942. I'm looking for information to corroborate my assumptions, along with nickname, colors and consolidation date for LaValle High School (assuming it was into Reedsburg, but could also have been into Weston or Wonewoc). If you're interested, I'd appreciate the assistance in digging up information. Thanks! Moserjames79 (talk) 15:45, 19 August 2025 (UTC)

Hello, I did find that indeed the Baraboo Valley League was formed with those 4 teams in 1928, per North Freedom's 1929 yearbook: https://www.classmates.com/siteui/yearbooks/88662?page=14&searchTerm=basketball. The conference likely didn't have a second year, as in 1929, Lime Ridge was about to start play in the Wisconsin River League, leaving the conference with three teams. Ironically, Lime Ridge backed out of the Wisconsin River right before play was to begin: https://www.newspapers.com/image/883961495/?match=1&terms=%22wisconsin%20river%22%22lime%20ridge%22basketball
Based on what I then saw from Lime Ridge's schedule from 1929-1931, there wasn't much for conference play: https://www.newspapers.com/image/1026925998/?match=1&terms=%22lime%20ridge%22%20basketball. Many of the schools Lime Ridge and North Freedom played were smaller two-year schools that weren't WIAA members. (La Valle, Ironton, Ableman/Rock Springs, etc.). This leads me to think the schools played independent schedules with the other 2 years throughout this time.
I think the Valley-Ridge was a one off conference as well. I couldn't find anything past the year you found.
It does appear that La Valle is a part of the Reedsburg school district now, but not sure of a consolidation date https://wi-dpi.maps.arcgis.com/apps/instant/lookup/index.html?appid=0b5f16586b5348bc8b0f13a5805db29f#find=Reedsburg. The latest I saw any references was about 1960, right around the time of forced consolidation. It could have been closed much earlier too and they kept the building around, but I couldn't tell for sure. It was likely a 2 year school (akin to Milladore and Junction City in Wood County) and was never a WIAA member, also like Millie and JC. Colors likely black and orange: https://www.newspapers.com/image/868705209/?match=3&terms=valle%20orange%20black%20uniforms. No nickname I could find. Was able to confirm that La Valle was a two-year school at least since after World War II: Jun 05, 1949, page 41 - Wisconsin State Journal at Newspapers.com Moserjames79 (talk) 17:32, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
