Hi @Nurken, I hope you are doing well! I am currently working on expanding and improving the Wikipedia article for the upcoming 2026 Kazakh legislative election. I am trying to gather high-quality media to illustrate the page. If you are located in Kazakhstan or have access to campaign materials, could you possibly help by taking and uploading some photos to Wikimedia Commons? I am specifically looking for real-world visuals like political party or CEC billboards and outdoor advertisements, street posters or campaign flyers, and campaign events or public rallies, similar to what you've uploaded before. Just please take them from a specific distance and angle as a way to avoid FOP deletion, like you safely did prior.

I've also been thinking about how we can systemically get more licensed photos of Kazakh figures onto Wikipedia to expand our visual illustration. Since I'm not sure how Kazakh editors are organized right now, maybe we could form a coordinated group or use an existing one? We could look into getting someone official "journalist" credentials to attend party congresses and press briefings. From there, we could pool fundraising money to buy professional camera equipment and cover travel trips so one of us can act as a photojournalist.

Alternatively, we could use a fund to try to make commercial agreements with Kazakh press media to purchase full rights to their photos, though buying out those copyrights could possibly cost an exorbitant, unrealistic amount of money. I heard there are active Kazakh editor groups on Telegram and that WikiBilim has been involved in the past.

What do you think about my idea pitch of pooling funds for equipment and photo trips? It's just my own dream and fantasy idea right now. I don't want to act like everyone has time and money, but I am personally willing to share some of my own money to get it started. Maybe together, along with others volunteering or joining a fundraising pool, we could support a trusted person to cover potential trips, hotel stays, and food to make this happen. It's a similar concept to how Wikipedians sometimes pool money to purchase rare books or access archival sources for references, just applied to visual media. I've shared this with the active Kazakh Wikipedians in Astana who show up to events so we'll be looking into this. It definitely sounds exciting. I think even submitting a financial support request from the Foundation itself could also be a possibility. I'm already part of the WikiPortraits initiative which gets people the photographer credentials, it's just the equipment that I need. In Austria, I asked Wikimedia Austria which does lend camera equipment but unfortunately there are no such resources in Kazakhstan as of now. Nurken (talk) 11:21, 3 August 2026 (UTC)

I do think we might be bit too late to implement this for the upcoming 2026 legislative election, especially since the major party congresses have already taken place. However, I think it is better to start organizing this as soon as possible, so we aren't caught off guard next time. My goal now is for us to be 100% ready by the time the next presidential election is announced. While it is officially scheduled for 2029, there is always a chance it could happen even earlier. If we start pooling funds, securing equipment, and building a workflow now, we can be completely prepared the moment the cycle starts. Since you are based in Austria, we could potentially look into whether WMAT can provide professional camera gear or travel grants, though I'm not sure how the exact paperwork works perhaps you could apply for an official foreign correspondent pass through the Kazakh Ministry of Foreign Affairs), or maybe look into getting accredited as an international election observer, but I'd advise you to look up the local accreditation systems and venue navigation to see what is actually feasible for securing a good spot to get those photos. As a fellow editor covering Kazakhstan, I wanted to reach out because I've been trying to nominate the 2026 Kazakh legislative election article for Wikipedia's Main Page "In the News" (ITN) section. Since it's a national election, it is automatically listed under WP:ITNR, but a couple of users prematurely slammed a neutrality tag on it and caused the ITN discussion to get procedurally closed.

Yue and Shane have already pointed out on the talk page that the article is perfectly balanced and well-sourced, but I could really use your support there to help firmly clear up the dispute. If we can get that tag removed, I am going to immediately renominate it and hopefully you can support the article's nomination for ITN.
