Please help me with... Sometimes an article I'm editing will contain a reference to a web page that doesn't exist, i.e., clicking through to the purported source ends up with "Page not found." In such a case, am I able to add a superscripted comment (to the right of the superscripted reference number) that says "citation doesn't work"? Pratchettfan (talk) 13:43, 6 June 2026 (UTC)

If the URL doesn't work, the best thing to do is check a web archiving service such as Wayback Machine to see if the page has been archived somewhere. If that's the case, then you can use the |archive-url=, |archive-date=, and |url-status=dead to add a link to the archival page. If the URL doesn't work and the URL hasn't been archived, then the best thing to do is add {{dead link}} after the reference, which will alert other editors that it should be replaced at the earliest opportunity.
