your prose over at Fake or Fortune?

Hello and first off; thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. You added the following to Fake or Fortune?:

In a concluding segment, Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould reconvene in the present day to assess how both works have acquired heightened attention — and significantly greater market value — in the wake of the 2020 toppling of the statue of Edward Colston, an episode that intensified scrutiny of Britain’s historical entanglement with the transatlantic slave trade. They revisit the current custodians, Lady Mansfield and Charlie and Sarah Macquaker, to chart the trajectory of each painting. David Martin’s portrait of Dido Elizabeth Belle and Lady Elizabeth Murray has since been included in a number of exhibitions devoted to Black portraiture, while Emma Soyer’s Two Black Girls with a Book entered a long-term loan agreement at the Tate in 2022, reflecting its elevated cultural and historical resonance.

I couldn't help noticing a rather large number of phrases that stand out as carrying several markers of an educated intellectual language:

  • "a concluding segment"
  • "reconvene in the present day"
  • "both works have acquired heightened attention"
  • "an episode that intensified scrutiny"
  • "Britain’s historical entanglement"
  • "the current custodians"
  • "chart the trajectory"
  • "reflecting its elevated cultural and historical resonance"

There is nothing wrong with this in itself, but it has its time and place. And Wikipedia isn't necessarily that place. In each case, had I written this, I would have gone for a simpler more direct language. And in several cases, I did. Each time you replace fairly regular wordings with phrases with a similar meaning but using significantly less common words. In other words, my impression is that the tone of this piece is overladen, not a particularly good match for the article, and not Plain English, something the MOS used to prescribe before it was changed to the current wording "Editors should write articles using straightforward, succinct, and easily understood language."

I gotta ask - is this your regular vocabulary? Would you mind lightening up your text?

Engaging here to give you a chance to respond before I decide on what action to take on the page. Best regards, CapnZapp (talk) 18:40, 25 August 2025 (UTC)

Hello, it is clear from your wording that the style I employed — informed by my background in journalism — is not deemed acceptable on Wikipedia. That said, I have now rewritten the section in a markedly plainer manner. For the record, I formally object to the suggestion that my original style was inappropriate, and I regard this alteration as a concession to editorial preference rather than a necessary correction.
