Al-Shater Bossely Abdul Jalil Al-Shater Bossely Abdul Jalil (Arabic: الشاطر بصيلي عبد الجليل; also transliterated Al-Shāṭir Buṣaylī ʿAbd al-Jalīl; 1901–1977) was an Egyptian-born writer, historian, and anthropologist who specialised in the history of Sudan and the Nile Valley. Working largely outside academia for the first three decades of his career, he became a significant contributor to Sudanese historiography, and his principal work remains a reference in the field of Nile Valley and Funj Sultanate studies.
Early life Abdul Jalil was born in Aswan, Egypt, in 1901.[1] He later attended Cairo University, where he studied history and anthropology.
Career Government service in Sudan (1919–1951) Abdul Jalil entered government employment in Sudan at an early age, beginning his career as a railway clerk. He served under the Sudan Government from 1919 to 1951,[2] a period spanning the final years of the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium and the run-up to Sudanese independence. During these decades he developed deep expertise in local archives and Arabic historical manuscripts related to Sudanese history. Academic role at Cairo University (1951–) After 1951, Abdul Jalil returned to Egypt and took up the post of Librarian at the Institute of Sudanese Studies at Cairo University,[2] where he was able to consolidate and disseminate his archival research.
Scholarly works An Outline History of the Nile Valley Sudan (1955) Abdul Jalil's principal scholarly work, An Outline History of the Nile Valley Sudan (Arabic: معالم تاريخ سودان وادي النيل, Maʿālim tārīkh Sūdān Wādī al-Nīl), was published in Cairo in 1955 by Abu Fadil Press as part of the series Dirāsāt tārīkhīyah Sūdānīyah (Sudanese Historical Studies).[2] The work covers Nile Valley Sudanese history from the tenth to the nineteenth century CE and is held in the collections of Columbia University Libraries and the National Library of Israel, among others. The book was reviewed in the Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies in 1957 by P. M. Holt, then one of the leading British historians of Sudan.[2] It was also reviewed in Antiquity in 1957 by F. Addison.[3] The Manuscript of Katib al-Shuna (1961) Abdul Jalil edited and published The Manuscript of Katib al-Shuna on the History of the Sennar Sultanate and Egyptian Administration (Arabic: مخطوطة كاتب الشونة في تاريخ السلطنة السنارية والإدارة المصرية, Makhṭūṭa kātib al-shūna fī tārīkh al-sulṭāna al-sinnāriyya wa'l-idāra al-miṣriyya), a primary-source manuscript chronicle compiled by Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Ḥāj Abū ʿAlī (Kātib al-Shūna). The edited volume was reviewed by Muhammad Mustafa Ziyadah and published in Cairo in 1961 by the Ministry of Culture and National Guidance.[4]
Legacy and scholarly impact Abdul Jalil's work has been cited by leading scholars of Sudanese and African history. P. M. Holt cited his 1955 Maʿālim in the foundational article "Funj Origins: A Critique and New Evidence" (Journal of African History, 1963).[5] Jay Spaulding cited both the Maʿālim and the edited Makhṭūṭa kātib al-shūna directly in his 1972 article "The Funj: A Reconsideration",[6] designating the Makhṭūṭa as "Funj Chronicle (B)" — a standard reference label that has continued in subsequent scholarship on the Funj Sultanate. The obituary published by Abd al-Rahman Zaki in the Egyptian Historical Journal (al-Majallah al-Tarikhiyah al-Misriyah) in 1978, the year after Abdul Jalil's death, provides the primary biographical account of his life and career.[1] Abdul Jalil died in Cairo in 1977.[1]
