I tend to frequent other areas of Wikipedia and don't land on drum corps pages very often, but I do so once in a while and I just noticed that there is some aggressive deletion going on, and it seems to be driven by editors/admins who don't have any familiarity with the activity, making arguments along lines such as "The page about corps X should be deleted because they have never had competitive success, with no history of finishing in the top 3". This ignores the high visibility and influence that all of the DCI corps finishing in the top 12 get by virtue of being in the Finals broadcast and in the recordings, and classes as "not notable due to no competitive success" some incredibly influential corps like the Crossmen, who have appeared in the DCI Finals 29 times! The other argument seems to be that since drum corps don't get a lot of mainstream press coverage, they are not notable according to Wikipedia's standards. (Coverage in periodicals about marching music, e.g., Drum Corps World, apparently does not count for anything.) This is maybe a good argument for a traditional encyclopedia (i.e., the print ones that mostly no longer exist), but not for Wikipedia, where there are many, many topics that are accepted as "notable" and have much smaller number of people who know or think much about the topic in question than drum corps, which has hundreds of thousands of people in this category if you count participants, spectators, and fans. I don't really know how to counter this or where to argue about it, though, as the deletions are happening in piecemeal fashion and there isn't a central place to discuss what really should count as relevant for inclusion in Wikipedia. Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. I'm noticing that the tables for Yearly programs and score aren't standarized between corps, especially between DCI and DCA/former DCA corps. Should that be something to consider or apply? Hiya2527 (talk) 02:09, 30 April 2024 (UTC)

Hello all, I've noticed some cleanup that needs to be done on some of the pages where the show tables are inconsistent, I know we have a template on the projects page, but I was talking to @Bgsu98 and he is of the opinion that we should change the template to only have color in the cell that lists the corps placement for that year.

Personally, I disagree, but figured I should post a message here so that we can come to a consensus and I can get to work helping to unify everything.

Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps has a good example of this issue, where the later shows are formatted one way, and the earlier ones another.

Whichever way everyone decides is fine with me, I just think a discussion is warranted here. TheRainComes (talk) 13:58, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
