Scope of project: historical roads?

Continuing a conversation with Imzadi1979 from their Talk page -- what are/should be the inclusion criteria for this project? In particular, should/does it include historical roads, such as the Sacred Way between ancient Athens and Eleusis?

In that discussion (linked above), I raised that:

  • The {{WikiProject Highways}} banner links to Highway, which begins A highway in the broadest sense of the term is any public or private road or other public way on land, including not just major roads but also other public roads and rights of way.
  • This project is a redirect for WP:WikiProject Roads (and, as I subsequently found out, banners to {{WikiProject UK Roads}}, which also redirects to this WikiProject, were substituted to it in 2024), which would seem to imply that it's intended to cover roads in general.
  • As of this morning, the project's Assessment statistics included historical roads (Wade's Causeway), street names (Gropecunt Lane), routes that are not roads (Woolwich Ferry), and certain things adjacent to roads (The Air Balloon, Birdlip) (NB that some of the references here are out of date, as of this afternoon, since Imzadi1979 has removed the pages in question from it.).

Imzadi1979 wrote that The project has been dedicated over the years by practice to modern numbered highways, even if the definition of the word "highway" is historically more expansive. If the project were intended to encompass more, it would have been named WikiProject Roads, but it was not.

Can anybody point me to a previous discussion/inclusion criteria page on the topic -- or, alternatively, can we discuss here whether things that are not modern numbered highways are within its scope? UndercoverClassicist T·C 16:26, 4 April 2026 (UTC)

Route description and New York State Route 96

Hi WP:HIGHWAYS, I just noticed New York State Route 96 for review because most of the route description is uncited, and it contains citation needed templates. I am not sure if there is an exception for citing routes, and if so what that exception entails. Could editors more up-to-date on policies and guidelines in this area take a look and post their views on the article's talk page? Thanks, Z1720 (talk) 02:14, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
