Hey UC, I hope you are doing well. I just wanted to ask about the Homeric Hymns. I was recently doing research for something personal, and it got me thinking about creating pages for the individuals hymns. Out of the core four (longest) Homeric Hymns, the ones that interest me the most are the ones to Aphrodite and Demeter.

Now, I don't plan on doing anything regarding this project in the immediate future, but I was wondering if you had any ideas/thoughts on how such articles should be structured?

I was thinking that - besides the "Content" section - it would be good to have individual sections for: date of composition; use of the hymns (as I read a source discussing how the Hymn to Demeter was likely used during religious rituals); extant manuscripts and whether any known or notable differences exist between them; influence on both ancient and modern texts (whether other hymns/poems or films, games, etc); and reception to these hymns. Arguably, the last two points could be treated as one thing.

Hello -- sorry, I hadn't seen this. Agreed that many of these could do with their own articles, particularly Demeter (I've got the skeleton of that in my userspace somewhere). The structure you propose sounds pretty sensible -- start with what the hymn is about, then talk about its composition, history etc, then move into the modern day. I saw you were the last person to put some work into this. My impression when I stumbled across it was that it was poorly defined and unmaintained. I understand it was intended to cover some ground that categories don't cover, but as a result, it seems to have ended up being just a bare BLP-sensitive list with rather scant referencing, which I haven't often seen. The creator got indef-blocked in 2010, and most of the maintenance since 2010 seems to have been removing entries whose articles got deleted. It could do with some improvement. I'd suggest that List of target rifle shooters would be a good template for what it might look like, with a "discipline" column added. That list has quite a bit of value over a category -- it allows you to sort by when they were active and their national status. Both would be even better with a photograph and a brief biography. On the face of it, the topic (British sport shooters) is obviously encyclopaedic and would seem to meet WP:NLIST -- publications about shooting talk about British shooters as a set all the time. As long as the articles themselves are reasonable and meet WP:GNG, WP:NSPORT etc it's pretty trivial to pull the references out of them -- the fullbore list hasn't actually done that in most cases, but in most cases you only need to click on the linked article to see a whole load of references and/or obviously notable achievements. I don't really have a horse in this race - I just came across the article at random and wondered if it deserved a PROD. I was unable, for instance, to figure out who Jan Powell might be. Deletion would be a matter of notability of the topic, not the quality of the article, barring a few quite unusual circumstances that don't apply here (e.g. massive copyright violation or egregious slanders about living people). Notability works a bit differently for items on a list -- in general, if the list topic itself is notable, the individual members don't necessarily have to be, although lots of lists which could be very large (such as List of University of Cambridge people, which in theory could have everyone with any sort of degree from Cambridge) limit inclusion to items that have or could have a Wikipedia article (that is, which meet WP:GNG etc). But the list definitely isn't perfect, and fixing something requires nobody's permission, so feel free to go ahead! UndercoverClassicist ^T·C 09:32, 17 July 2026 (UTC)

No comment on if there’s a connection between you and that account, and please don’t feel pressured to confirm anything; I’m taking shots in the dark here. But do you feel that a rewrite of the LBA collapse article is warranted à la Marian reforms, which you reviewed for GA, especially if more recent (and/or rigorous) historiography casts doubt on popular and entrenched understanding? Hey! Hope you're doing well. Thank you for your earlier reply about the Homeric Hymn to Demeter. While reading some sources, I stumbled upon a reference to the Golden Bough (again, lol) that I think might interest you. It's from Judith Fletcher's book on the Underworld. In the chapter "The Ghost of the Father: Spirits of the Postmodern", she heavily discusses the The Sandman comic book by DC Comics, including its Orpheus narrative. While it gets only briefly mentioned, when Orpheus descends to her Eurydice, a "Vergilian Charon accepts a golden bough" from him (page 83). While only a brief mention, it is within the broader discussion of how Neil Gaiman combines various elements from Greco-Roman mythology (as well as Dante and John Milton) to create his Underworld(s).
