Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Jazz

Hello all, as a contributor on the Dutch Wikipedia I mainly write about music (usually indie rock/lo fi). Every now and then I stumble upon articles up for deletion on TBP, our version of AfD, that spark my interest. Yesterday a stub about the fusion group CBW was nominated for deletion. The group consisted of Coryell, Bailey and White. I was able to find one or two sources for the articles about the two albums that the group released, but none about the group itself. I found it peculiar that media like AllMusic and The Guardian would review CBW's work, but none would write about the group as an entity. I have a suspicion that there must be more source material.

I hardly listen to jazz. I have no idea where to look for more sources, especially from a time when the internet was still relatively young - assuming that much material would still be put on paper only. Yet, having listened to CBW's work, I am fascinated. It would be a shame if there really wasn't anything to write about them other than that they existed. I've searched what I have access to offline and found almost nothing. Unfortunately, I don't have DownBeat from the relevant time (about 2005 and 2006), so that's a possibility. ProQuest, available in perhaps limited form through the Wikipedia Library, returns a brief mention in "Aficionados of jazz guitar get a weekend to die for" YASIEJKO, CHRISTOPHER. The News Journal; Wilmington, Del.. 26 Jan 2007: Z.12. There are reviews of the albums in The Times, The Washington Post and Birmingham Post, but they probably won't help if the album reviews you mention are insufficient. The Boston Globe has an announcement (08 Sep 2005) of concerts promoting an album and a review of a concert (14 Sep 2005). More concert reviews are in Sunday Independent (23 July 2006), The Washington Post (03 Oct 2005) and Evening Standard (31 Jan 2006). There are more listed in ProQuest, so that's probably your best option for finding supporting material. EddieHugh (talk) 15:11, 28 June 2026 (UTC)

Dear Project Jazz editors, I have a Conflict of Interest (COI) regarding the jazz and blues guitarist Mike Armando, who toured as the primary guitarist for Screamin' JayHawkins during the 1970s. He is currently mentioned in plain black text in the "Career" section of the main Screamin' Jay Hawkins Wikipedia page. Could a neutral editor please do two quick things? Update his mention on the Hawkins page to a red link: Mike Armando.Look at his populated Wikidata page, https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q140051930 to see his jazz and blues discography. He is featured in Steve Bergsman's biography book, I Put a Spell on You:The Bizarre Life of Screamin' Jay Hawkins published by Feral House in 12 pages.Turning his name into a red link will properly bridge Wikipedia to his Wikidata profile and help music editors start his biographical page.Thank you for your time! Hi Carolann54, red-linking won't provide the seamless link to Wikidata that you suggest. On desktop, clicking the red link takes you to an empty Create Mike Armando screen. Similar on mobile, though if you choose and then cancel page creation, it then allows you to search other resources such as Wikidata. Looking at the sources linked on the Wikidata item, I don't think there is enough to demonstrate individual notability here at this time. AllyD (talk) 08:48, 19 July 2026 (UTC)

So the Steve Bergsman Book freatured Mike Armando in 12 pages Of that book, I Put A Spell On You: The Bizarre Life of Screamin' Jay Hawkins published by Feral House on his days of being Hawkins guitarist. The write ups in Psychedelic Baby Magazine and others and 14 record releases on the mja Record lable as artist and producer with one of the releases Half Steppen in Billboards FM Top action picks. One of those releases Fred Lipsius Better Believe who was the saxophonist for BS&T it was released on Rounder Records and distributed though MCA Universal titled Stop The Gun Violence Mike Armando was the producer for that recording is not enough at this time you think? I am Bob Graf’s daughter and have disclosed my conflict of interest on the draft. I recently revised Draft:Bob Graf and would appreciate an experienced jazz editor’s opinion on whether the independent published sources are sufficient for notability.

The main sources include Chris Sheridan’s Count Basie: A Bio-Discography, Dennis Owsley’s City of Gabriels, Richard Cook and Brian Morton’s The Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD, LP and Cassette, Down Beat, and NPR.

I’m not asking anyone to promote the draft. I would especially appreciate feedback on the strength of the sources and whether anything should be changed before another AfC review.

It's difficult to know, based on what's there. The most relevant notability criteria are WP:MUSICBIO. The best chance might be #5 there; the draft mentions one album for Delmark Records... were there any more albums by him as a leader that were released by labels that have a Wikipedia article?
