Disagreement on Christchurch article re:settlement definition

There is a dispute at the article for Christchurch, Dorset over whether, how, and in how much detail, the article should cover Bournemouth Airport – a major employer which was in the now defunct borough of Christchurch, but some distance outside the built-up area in a neighbouring parish. This is essentially a difference of opinion on how to handle the ambiguity around defining settlements. If you think you can help resolve this, join the discussion at Talk:Christchurch,_Dorset#Bournemouth_airport. Thanks, Joe D (t) 10:38, 3 April 2022‎ (UTC)

Maps in {{Infobox trail}}

Something seems to have changed in the way maps are automatically created for {{Infobox trail}}. I'm sure I would have noticed sooner if the map in the infobox for South West Coast Path had always been as odd as it is today, and the one for West Highland Way is similar. Meanwhile Dales Way, Pennine Way and Hadrian's Wall Path have maps which share a format, while The Ridgeway and Cleveland Way have individual maps.

I can't work out from the description of the template just how these good or bad maps are created, and thus what should be done to generate good maps for the SWCP and WHW. Can anyone here shed any light (or, ideally, fix those two)? PamD 21:40, 20 April 2026 (UTC)

Infobox English county template changes

I've opened two discussions at Template talk:Infobox English county, one about removing the 'motto', 'time zone', and 'ethnicity' parameters and the other about updating the local government paramaters. Feel free to participate if you'd like. Thanks, A.D.Hope (talk) 06:12, 21 April 2026 (UTC)

City centre articles

I have a dislike of the various city centre articles such as Liverpool city centre, Nottingham city centre, Sheffield city centre, Leeds city centre. To me they're nothing better than link magnets for every single building, tourist attraction and organisation based in the city and contain little encyclopaedic information. They're essentially Wikitravel articles. What is worse is their use of {{Infobox UK place}} implying that they are official settlements. I'm not advocating deletion but I think serious cleanup is needed and at the very least that infobox should be removed/replaced. What do others think? 10mmsocket (talk) 08:30, 22 April 2026 (UTC)

We have articles about other districts of cities so it seems remiss not to cover the city centre in as much detail, as often it's the sort of detail that wouldn't be appropriate in the article about the city as a whole. But I agree the quality of these articles is often poor and can stray into WP:NOTDIR territory instead of focusing on the history, geography and developments specific to that locality that don't necessarily have the same relevance for the wider city. In other words, I think it's important to have these articles but they need a lot of cleanup. WaggersTALK 09:30, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
Agreed 100%. Any opinion on the infobox usage? 10mmsocket (talk) 09:42, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
A place doesn't have to be "official" to justify an infobox. We have lots of articles about villages, towns, suburbs etc. that don't have official status/boundaries, as opposed to officially recognised civil parishes, wards and so on. I'm generally in favour of infoboxes for any article that contains enough information to justify one. WaggersTALK 09:50, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
I get, that. I guess my objection comes down to the use of that specific infobox meant for settlements rather than areas of a city, which ends up listing fire, police, councils etc. I wonder if there is a more suitable infobox to use? 10mmsocket (talk) 12:08, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
Most areas of a city are (or were at one time) settlements in their own right. I don't really see the need to differentiate between the infobox we'd use for a standalone village and the infobox we'd use for a "village" that has become an urban suburb. It's still a place and the same bits of information (emergency services etc.) apply to it. WaggersTALK 13:19, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
I've been cleaning up Liverpool city centre mostly because it contained a lot of WP:OR and was written like a brochure for prospective investors (the Liverpool article falls foul of this as well in places). There's no shortage of reliable, independent sources for city centres but a lot of the content (e.g. Liverpool city centre#Architecture is already covered in other articles (Architecture of Liverpool, Liverpool#Landmarks) which is where I think most readers would expect to find it. I doubt there'd be consensus to merge these articles into their parent city articles though, as there are multiple articles about urban neighbourhoods and they easily pass WP:GNG independently. I applaud your cleanup efforts, although I think we need to go harder with the pruning! 10mmsocket (talk) 09:44, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
Thanks :) I think looking at what is already sufficiently covered in other articles is a good start. I'm not opposed to keeping most of the headings with just a brief sentence or two and link to the main articles. I'm trying to think what I'd want to find in an article about a city centre I'd never visited before. Orange sticker (talk) 09:50, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
