A number of the entries for individual presidential elections start of with phrasing like "Presidential elections were held in the United States on November 6, 1956." The plural is confusing; while there are a bunch of separate votes effectively for individual electoral college members, the whole process is one election, one president is being elected. This is reflected in the title of the articles -- that one was taken from 1956 United States presidential election, singular. The common reference would be to "the 1956 presidential election" -- doing a quick newspapers.com search, trying to find "1956 presidential election", in the first 50+ results I find only one actual such use (plus one that looked it but was talking about the "1952 and 1956 presidential elections", so legit plural.)
