Los premios MTV Video Music Awards 1992 fueron entregados en el Pauley Pavilion de la ciudad de Los Ángeles y transmitido en vivo por el canal de televisión estadounidense MTV el 9 de septiembre de 1992. En evento tuvo lugar un roce entre las bandas Guns n' Roses y Nirvana en donde todo empezó cuando Kurt Cobain bromeó a Axl Rose ofreciéndole ser el padrino de su hija Frances. Posteriormente, Axl amenazó a Cobain con golpearlo si este no callaba a su esposa, Courtney Love. Antes de entrar al escenario, los bajistas Krist Novoselic y Duff McKagan casi entran en un intercambio de golpes. Pero la rivalidad se hizo evidente cuando después de interpretar Lithium en el escenario, Kurt comenzó a destruir los instrumentos para evitar que la siguiente banda, que era Guns n' Roses, pudiera dar su interpretación. Mientras sucedía, el baterista de Nirvana, Dave Grohl, comenzó a burlarse del vocalista de Guns n' Roses por el micrófono diciendo; «Hi Axl!!!, Hi Axl!!!» (español: ¡¡¡Hola, Axl!!! ¡¡¡Hola, Axl!!!) como un intento de provocarlo. Posteriormente, Axl y Kurt también hicieron evidente su rivalidad en entrevistas.
