Premios NAIDOC

Los premios toman su nombre del comité que originalmente era responsable de organizar las actividades nacionales para conmemorar la Semana NAIDOC, el National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee.^[1] Cada año, una ciudad distinta acoge la ceremonia nacional de los Premios NAIDOC. La ciudad anfitriona, la competición nacional del cartel (National NAIDOC Poster Competition) y los ganadores de los premios son seleccionados por el Comité Nacional NAIDOC.^[2] Los premios se entregan en la ceremonia anual de los Premios NAIDOC y el baile (NAIDOC Awards Ceremony and Ball).^[1]

Los nombres de las categorías han variado a lo largo del tiempo. En 1985 se introdujeron premios para Aboriginal of the Year (Aborigen del Año) y para jóvenes aborígenes de 12 a 25 años.^[3]

El primer cartel de NAIDOC fue creado en 1972 para promover el «Aborigines Day» (Día de los Aborígenes), que se había establecido como parte de una campaña por mejores derechos para el pueblo aborigen. Los carteles siguieron reflejando el espíritu de protesta hasta 1977, con títulos como «Self Determination» (Autodeterminación) y «Chains or Chance» (Cadenas o oportunidad). El cartel de 1978 fue diferente, reflejando el paso de un único día de manifestación a una celebración de una semana cada julio, tras la creación del nuevo comité. El cartel de 1988, «Recognise and Share the Survival of the Oldest Culture in the World» (Reconocer y compartir la supervivencia de la cultura más antigua del mundo), reflejó el cambio de nombre a NAIDOC, que incluyó formalmente a las personas de las islas del estrecho de Torres en el evento. En la década de 1990 se introdujo un concurso para diseñar el cartel.^[5]

La ceremonia nacional de los Premios NAIDOC de 2021 en Alice Springs (Mparntwe) fue cancelada. Se planeó un evento alternativo de los Premios NAIDOC para el 3 de julio de 2021 en la Ópera de Sídney, pero fue aplazado.^[19][20] Cuando Sídney entró en confinamiento por COVID-19 el 23 de junio, las normas para viajeros que regresaban al Territorio del Norte implicaban que la mayoría de las personas no podían asistir al evento de Sídney sin una cuarentena de 14 días.^[21][22] Los ganadores fueron anunciados el 1 de diciembre de 2021.^[23] Los ganadores fueron:^[24]

• Debido al impacto y la incertidumbre de la pandemia de COVID-19 en Australia el Comité Nacional NAIDOC canceló los Premios NAIDOC nacionales de 2020.^[25] La National Indigenous Australians Agency anunció que los premios de 2020 se entregarían en julio de 2021 junto con los premios de 2021.^[26]
