Le gaz naturel liquéfié est utilisé pour le transport du gaz naturel sur de grandes distances et essentiellement par voies maritimes. Souvent, le port méthanier est construit pour l'importation (terminal de regazéification) et l'exportation (terminal de liquéfaction) de manière exclusive du GNL.
