民族
アフガニスタン人は多様な民族的背景を持つ。最大の民族集団はパシュトゥーン人である。 歴史家クリフォード・エドマンド・ボズワースは、アフガンを主としてパシュトゥーン人を指す歴史的民族名と定義している。彼は10世紀の地理書『Hudūd al-ʿĀlam』などの中世イスラム資料を分析し、この語が当初はヒンドゥークシュ山脈とインダス川の間に居住する特定のパシュトゥーン部族を指していたことを示している[6][7][8]。
ボズワースは、1964年憲法によって「アフガン」がすべてのアフガニスタン国民の公式呼称として標準化されたことを認めつつも、近代国家アフガニスタンの成立以前、歴史的には長らくパシュトゥーン人を指す呼称であった点を強調している[9]。
タジク人、ハーザラ人、ウズベク人は人口の約60～70％を占め、イラン系・トルコ系・モンゴル系など多様な言語民族的起源を有する[10] 。
