アードマン・アニメーションズ

学生時代からアニメーションの制作をしていたピーター・ロードとデイビッド・スプロクストンによって1972年に設立された^[1]。社名は彼らが制作しBBCで放送された作品「Vision On」に登場するスーパーヒーロー"アードマン"に由来する。翌年からプラスチシンと呼ばれる粘土を用いてクレイアニメの制作を始める。このとき生まれた作品は「モーフ(the amazing adventures of morph)」として人気シリーズとなる。

1982年に制作した「会話の断片(Conversation Pieces)」において「リップ・シンク(Lip Synch)」という手法を開発する。これは先に声優の声を録音した上で、その声にあわせてパペットの口を動かすというアードマンの"お家芸"である。

1985年よりニック・パークがアードマンに参加、後に世界的な人気シリーズとなる『ウォレスとグルミット』の第一作「チーズ・ホリデー」を完成させる^[1]。

1989年にリップ・シンクシリーズ『快適な生活〜ぼくらはみんないきている〜(Creature Comforts)』を制作する。この作品は1990年のアカデミー賞短編アニメ賞を受賞した。

1991年、WOWOWで2001年に放送された『レックス・ザ・ラント(Rex･The･Runt)』というアニメが製作された。また同年にヨーロッパなどでは大人気の『アングリー・キッド(Angry･Kid)』というのも製作されていた。さらに『ウォレスとグルミット』シリーズ第二作「ペンギンに気をつけろ!(The Wrong Trousers)」(1993年)、第三作「ウォレスとグルミット、危機一髪(A Close Shave)」(1995年)は両作品ともアカデミー賞短編アニメ賞を受賞した。また、ドリームワークスと五本の作品の共同制作を契約、2000年にはその第一弾である長編『チキンラン (Chicken Run)』を制作、世界的なヒットを飛ばす。

2005年、ドリームワークスとの共同制作第二弾となる『ウォレスとグルミット』シリーズ初の長編「ウォレスとグルミット 野菜畑で大ピンチ!(Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit)」が制作された。ところが同年10月10日未明、アードマンの倉庫で火災が発生、『ウォレスとグルミット』シリーズのストーリーボード、小道具やセット、受賞したトロフィーなどとともに焼け落ちてしまった（幸いオリジナルのフィルムやネガ、オスカー像は無事だった）。奇しくもその日は「野菜畑で大ピンチ!」がアメリカで初登場第一位を獲得した日であった。不幸に見舞われたアードマンであったが、「野菜畑で大ピンチ!」は第33回アニー賞全部門制覇、さらに第78回アカデミー賞の長編アニメ賞に輝いた。テレビコマーシャルも数多く手がけ、日本でもグリコ乳業のプッチンプリンや住友生命保険のCMに『ウォレスとグルミット』が登場した。

2006年、アードマン・アニメーションズ史上初の3Dアニメーション映画『マウス・タウン ロディとリタの大冒険』が公開。この映画は、ドリームワークスとの共同制作でもある。映画公開直前に、ドリームワークスとの提携解除が発表された。5本の契約のうち、実際に制作されたのは3本に終わった。

2007年に『ひつじのショーン』制作開始。BBCで放送され、日本でもNHKで放送された。

2011年、長編第4弾となる『アーサー・クリスマスの大冒険』を公開する。ドリームワークスとの提携が終了していたので、ソニー・ピクチャーズ・アニメーションからの配給となった。さらに翌年、同じくソニーの配給で、長編第5弾となる『ザ・パイレーツ! バンド・オブ・ミスフィッツ』を公開する。この映画は第85回アカデミー賞長編アニメ部門にノミネートされた。
