- 1935年～1955年はデッカ·レコードでSP盤などを録音した。そもそもはチック・ウェブ・オーケストラで歌い始める。1939年にウェブが死ぬとオーケストラは「エラ·フィッツジェラルドと彼女の有名なオーケストラ」となった。
- 1956年にヴァーヴ·レコード（ノーマン・グランツのレーベル）と契約し1960年代半ばまで録音。この時期の「グレート・アメリカン・ソングブック」の8歌集シリーズはエラの代表作とされる。含まれたのはコール・ポーター（1956）、ロジャース＆ハート（1956）、デューク・エリントン（1957）、アーヴィング・バーリン（1958）、ジョージとアイラ・ガーシュウィン（1959）、ハロルド・アーレン（1961）、ジェローム・カーン（1963）とジョニー・マーサー（1964）作品。
- 1960年代後半から1970年代初頭はキャピトルレコードやリプリーズ・レコードで活動。
- 1972年にノーマン·グランツは自分のパブロ·レコードで彼女と再契約。最期のアルバム「オール·ザット·ジャズ」（1989年）まで付き合った。
