来歴
サニーランド・スリムは、1906年9月5日、ミシシッピ州ヴァンスの非法人地域にほど近い、クイットマン郡の農場で生まれた[2][4]。彼は1925年にテネシー州メンフィスに移住し、当時人気のあったブルース・ミュージシャンたちの多くとプレイするようになった。彼の芸名は、メンフィスとセントルイスを結ぶ鉄道の名前「サニーランド・トレイン」から取ったものであった[4]。1942年、南部の黒人労働者が工業化が進む北部に向けて移動したアフリカ系アメリカ人の大移動の中、シカゴに居を移した[5]。
当時シカゴでは、エレクトリック・ブルースが形成されつつあり、スリムはマディ・ウォーターズ、ハウリン・ウルフ[6]、ロバート・ロックウッド・ジュニア、リトル・ウォルターらアーティストと共演を重ね、シカゴ・ブルースの形成に一役買う活躍を見せた[4]。彼のピアノは力強いベース音あるいはコードの連打を左手で行ない、右手ではトレモロをプレイするスタイルが特徴的であった。彼の声は大きく、まるで演説のように感情を込めて歌った[7]。
スリムの初のレコーディングは、1946年9月、アーマンド・"ジャンプ"・ジャクソンのバンドに歌手として参加したものであった。彼のリーダーとしての初のレコーディングはハイトーン・レコード、及びアリストクラット・レコードに1947年に行っている[8]。彼は1995年に死去するまで演奏活動を続けた。
彼はRCAレコードに「ドクター・クレイトンの友人（Doctor Clayton's Buddy）」名義で「Illinois Central」（B面は「Sweet Lucy Blues」）(Victor 20–2733)をシングル・リリースしている[9]。
1960年代後半には、スリムはキャンド・ヒートのメンバーたちと親しくなり、彼らのアルバム『Boogie With Canned Heat』収録の「Turpentine Moan」でピアノをプレイした。その返礼として、バンドのメンバーだったヘンリー・ヴェスティン（ギター）、アラン・ウィルソン（スライド・ギター）、ラリー・テイラー（ベース）がスリムのリバティー・レコードからリリースされたアルバム『Slim's Got His Thing Goin' On』（1968年）に参加した。この作品ではミック・テイラーも客演している。
スリムは、アメリカ合衆国国立芸術基金のナショナル・ヘリテージ・フェローシップを1988年に授与された。このフェローシップは日本の人間国宝に相当するもので、フォークアート、伝統的なアートの分野において米国政府が授与する最高の栄誉である[10]。1991年には、ブルースの殿堂入りも果たしている[11]。
