ハンス・ライヘンバッハ

1891年、ハンブルク生まれ。エルンスト・カッシーラー、ダフィット・ヒルベルト、マックス・プランク、マックス・ボルン、アルノルト・ゾンマーフェルトらに物理学、数学、哲学を学び、確率に関する理論論文をエアランゲン大学に提出して博士号を取得した。

第一次世界大戦に従軍した後、シュトゥットガルト工科大学の私講師となった。1926年、ベルリン大学物理学科に移った。

1928年、経験哲学協会（ドイツ語: Die Gesellschaft für empirische Philosophie、英語: Society for Empirical Philosophy）いわゆるベルリン学派を創設。この協会には、カール・ヘンペル、リヒャルト・フォン・ミーゼス、ダフィット・ヒルベルトらが参加していた。

ユダヤ系の家系であったため、ナチズムが台頭すると1938年にチャールズ・W・モリスの助けを得てドイツを逃れ、アメリカに渡った。カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校心理学部で職を得た。ここで彼はヒラリー・パトナムやウェスレー・サモンを育てた。

• ライヘンバッハはベルリン学派(Berlin Circle)を作ったことと、 論理経験主義（logical empiricism, 論理実証主義と非常に近い立場であるがライヘンバッハ自身は論理経験主義という名前を好んだ）の主張で知られる。
• 物理学の基礎に関するさまざまな研究で知られるほか、かれの著書『科学的哲学の興隆』(1951年)（邦訳：『科学哲学の形成』1985年）は科学に裏打ちされた明晰な経験主義哲学を打ち出し、広範囲に影響を与えた。

• 父：ブルーノ・ライヘンバッハ(Bruno Reichenbach)はプロテスタントに改宗したユダヤ系商人。
• 兄：ベルナルド・ライヘンバッハ(Bernard Reichenbach)は社会主義者。
• 弟：ヘルマン・ライヘンバッハ(Herman Reichenbach)は音楽教師。
