メリー・メル

チェロキー族の母親から生まれた。自身を"MC"（マスター・オブ・セレモニー＝儀式の主人）と呼んだ最初の人物である。フューリアス・ファイブのもう一人のメンバーCowboy (キース・ウィギンス)は"hip-hop"という用語を生んだ。^[2]

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Fiveは別なグループ名でデビューしたが、プロデューサーは不適当な名前と感じ、名称を変更した。^[3]。Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Fiveは1979年にEnjoyレコードから"Superrappin'"を発表した。

その後Sugarhillレコードに移り、R&Bチャートで"Freedom""The Birthday Party"などのラップ曲を発表した。1982年、メリー・メルを含むGrandmaster Flash & The Furious Fiveは、新自由主義のレーガノミクスや、麻薬が黒人コミュニティーに及ぼす影響などを扱った『ザ・メッセージ』を発表した。ただし、メンバーは気が小さく、フラッシュやメリー・メルらはパーティー・ラップをやることを希望し、ディスコに政治的内容を持ち込むことに消極的だったが、制作者のシルヴィア・ロビンソンが積極的に、同曲のライムの内容でなければダメであるとして、発表した。^[4]

同曲はニューヨークとその周辺だけで、当初約50万枚のセールスを記録するヒットとなり、社会派ヒップホップの先駆けになった。同曲はデューク・ブーティ（英語版）のインストゥルメンタル曲"The Jungle"に歌詞を乗せたものである。同曲には以前の"Superrappin'"からの引用もあった。

他に、ニューヨーク生活の苦闘を"New York, New York"で、人生一般の戦いを"Survival (The Message 2)をラップで表現した。『ザ・メッセージ』の印税をめぐって、メリー・メルとSugarhillレコードのプロモーターSylvia Robinsonがもめるとグランドマスター・フラッシュはグループを脱退した。フラッシュはSugar Hillレコードを訴え、フューリアス・ファイブは分裂した。メルは「グランドマスター・メリー・メル」を名乗り、ザ・フューリアス・ファイヴのリーダーとなった。1983年にグループは麻薬撲滅を題材とした楽曲"White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)" を発表。ポスト・パンクのバンドリキッド・リキッドの『cavern』のベースラインをサンプリングし、非公式ビデオは当時無名の映画学校生スパイク・リーが監督、当時新人の俳優ローレンス・フィッシュバーンが出演していた。

同曲は"Grandmaster + Melle Mel"として発表され、レーベルは、フラッシュが参加しているという錯覚を与えようとした。メリー・メルは1984年に映画『ビート・ストリート』に出演、主題歌も歌いさらに成功した。

その後、1984年には、チャカ・カーンの"I Feel for You"（プリンス作曲）にラップで参加した^[5]。同楽曲にてメリー・メルはグラミー賞の「レコード・オブ・ザ・イヤー」賞を受賞した初のラッパーとなり、ラップをメインストリームに持ち込んだ。

彼は、Grandmaster Melle Mel & The Furious Fiveとして"Jesse", "Vice"などを発表した。このうち1"Vice"は人気ドラマの『マイアミ・ヴァイス』のサウンドトラックに収録された。また、"Jesse"は当時の黒人初の大統領候補ジェシー・ジャクソンへの投票を呼び掛ける内容である。

1985年には、アパルトヘイトに反対するアーティストたち（英語版）の一員として、アパルトヘイト撲滅歌『サン・シティ』の収録に参加した。彼がシーンの最前線にいたのはこの時期までで、その後はなつメロラッパー的な扱われ方をするようになる。

1988年にフラッシュと再合流しアルバム"On The Strength"を発表するが、エリックB&ラキム（英語版）、パブリック・エナミー, ブギ・ダウン・プロダクションズ, ビッグ・ダディ・ケインなどの新しいミュージシャンのアルバムが多数R&Bチャートに登場していたため、ヒットには至らなかった。

1980年代末にクインシー・ジョーンズの二作"Back On The Block" & "Q – The Autobiography of Quincy Jones"に参加した。1996年にシェールの楽曲"One By One"に参加した。1997年、Straight Gameレコードと契約、アルバムRight Nowを発表。元フューリアス・ファイブのScorpioも参加したが、売れなかった。

2001年、"On Lock"という曲をDie Hardという名前で映画Blazinのサントラで発表。Die Hardは2002年に7PRecordsでアルバム発表。2006年,作家Cricket Caseyと絵本"The Portal In The Park"を発売。付録CDにはメルのラップ版ナレーションがついていた。ちなみに、同CDには当時無名のレディー・ガガの歌う二曲の歌も収録されていた。2010年に絵本は再発。レディー・ガガは"World Family Tree""The Fountain of Truth"でメルと共演した。

2007年、初のソロ・アルバムMuscles（筋肉）発表。初のシングルは"M3 – The New Message"だった。2007年、Melle Mel and The Furious Five (フラッシュを含む)はラップ・グループとして初めてロックンロールの殿堂入りした。受賞演説でメルはヒップホップを非暴力化すべきだと主張、俺は撃たれたことがない。俺は逮捕されたことがない。人生ずっとヒップホップをやってきた。物事は俺一人では変えられない。みんなの助けが必要だ。さあいっしょにやろう。まともにやるんだ、と発言した。

2008年ドラマ‘Bronx Flavor’に出演。2011年、Urban Wrestling Federationに参加することを表明。 2012年のアイス-T の音楽ドキュメンタリー映画"Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap"に出演。
