Wahlkreis Southampton Test

Southampton Test ist ein Wahlkreis (englisch constituency) in der Grafschaft Hampshire im Südosten Englands, der einen Abgeordneten ins britische Unterhaus (House of Commons) entsendet. Er ist nach dem Fluss Test benannt, umfasst die westlichen Stadtteile von Southampton und besteht seit 1950.

Geschichte
Die Boundary Commission for England schuf den Wahlkreis im Hinblick auf die Unterhauswahl 1950. Er entstand durch die Teilung des Zweierwahlkreises Southampton (einem der letzten noch bestehenden) in zwei Einerwahlkreise. 1955, 1983, 1997 und 2024 nahm die Boundary Commission im Rahmen periodischer Überprüfungen verschiedene Änderungen des Grenzverlaufs vor.
Der Wahlkreis umfasst(e) folgende Gebiete:
- 1950–1955: im County Borough Southampton die Wards All Saints, Banister, Freemantle, Millbrook, St Nicholas, Shirley und Town sowie im Rural District Romsey and Stockbridge den Civil Parish Millbrook[2]
- 1955–1983: im County Borough Southampton die Wards Banister, Bargate, Bassett, Coxford, Freemantle, Millbrook, Portswood, Redbridge und Shirley[2][3]
- 1983–1997: in der City of Southampton die Wards Bassett, Coxford, Freemantle, Millbrook, Portswood, Redbridge und Shirley[4]
- 1997–2010: in der City of Southampton die Wards Coxford, Freemantle, Millbrook, Portswood, Redbridge, St Luke’s und Shirley[5]
- 2010–2024: in der City of Southampton die Wards Bevois, Coxford, Freemantle, Millbrook, Portswood, Redbridge und Shirley[6]
- seit 2024: in der City of Southampton die Wards Banister & Polygon (größter Teil), Bevois, Coxford, Freemantle, Millbrook, Portswood, Redbridge, Shirley und Swaythling (kleiner Teil)[7]
Erster Abgeordneter war Horace King von der Labour Party, der ab 1955 den benachbarten Wahlkreis Southampton Itchen vertrat. 1955 bzw. 1959 traten Anthony Crosland und Shirley Williams ohne Erfolg gegen John Howard von der Conservative Party an; allerdings wurden beide später in anderen Wahlkreisen gewählt und stiegen zu prominenten Ministern in den Labour-Regierungen der 1960er und 1970er Jahre auf. Das Wahlergebnis von Southampton Test war von 1966 bis 2010 im Gleichklang mit dem Ergebnis auf nationaler Ebene, mit Ausnahme der Minderheitsregierung von Harold Wilson von Februar bis Oktober 1974. Ab 1997 vertrat Alan Whitehead von Labour den Wahlkreis über ein Vierteljahrhundert lang. 2024 trat seine Parteikollegin Satvir Kaur die Nachfolge an.
