Born in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Loke holds a Bachelor Degree of Science in Development Science. He served as the MP for Rasah from March 2008 to May 2013, and Member of the Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Chennah from May 2013 to August 2026, as well as Lobak from March 2004 to May 2013.

He was State Chairman of DAP Negeri Sembilan from 2004 to 2026, when he resigned following that year's state election where he failed to defend his seat. He has held a number of other party leadership roles, and was also the Leader of the Opposition in Negeri Sembilan.

Early life and education

Anthony Loke Siew Fook was born in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. He was educated at St. Paul's Institution and Seri Ampangan High School. He graduated from National University of Malaysia (UKM) in 2000 with a Bachelor Degree of Science (BSc) in Development Science.[1]

His grandfather, Loke Ching Fatt (Chinese: 陸禎发) is the owner of the Loke Ching Kee (Chinese: 陸禎記) restaurant where the now famous Chinese New Year dish yee sang became popular.[2][3] He presented a history book on the dish in an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz on 31 January 2020.[4]

Anthony Loke is a Buddhist.[5]

Political career

Loke joined the DAP in 1994 at the age of 17,[6] the minimum age required to become a member.

He made his electoral debut in the 2004 Negeri Sembilan state election, contesting in Lobak. He won the contest and was re-elected in 2008.[6]

Following his victory in 2004, he was elected to the DAP's Central Executive Committee (CEC), and has been a member of this body since. He was also appointed the party's director of political education.[6]

In the 2008 general election, Loke was elected to the Dewan Rakyat representing Rasah, and became secretary of the party's political education bureau.[6]

In 2012, he was appointed the party's organising secretary.[6]

In the 2013 general election, he contested in Chennah and Seremban at the state and federal level respectively, winning in both.[6]

He successfully defended his two seats in the 2018 election, following which he was appointed Minister of Transport by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. He lost his position in federal government as a result of the 2020–2022 Malaysian political crisis.

Loke was appointed the party's 6th Secretary-General replacing Lim Guan Eng in the party's 2022 national congress. He also received the highst number of votes in the election to the party CEC.[7][8]

In the 2022 general election, he successfully defended his Seremban seat. Following the formation of a coalition government under Anwar Ibrahim, Loke was returned as Minister of Transport.

He was re-elected in the 2023 Negeri Sembilan state election but was defeated in the 2026 Negeri Sembilan state election, prompting his resignation as Chairman of DAP Negeri Sembilan.[9] The party's disappointing performance in three successive state elections, including Sabah and Johor, has led to questions over the party's continued participation in the government frontbench.[10]
