  • Comment: I'm afraid this still doesn't show that Ales Pavlin is notable, that is, whether or not there should be a Wikipedia article about this person. The Wikipedia doesn't have articles about everybody - it's selective. Please read WP:FILMMAKER which explains what the criteria for inclusion are. Basically, there needs to either be significant coverage of the PERSON in multiple reliable, independent sources - not just mentions that he produced a movie but books or newspapers etc actually writing a substantial amount about Ales Pavlin. Or if he has produced multiple films that are notable in themselves - so that are reviewed and written about in a significant way (not just mentions) by multiple, independent reliable sources - then he might be notable because of this. You don't show in this draft that either of these are the case and at the moment I have to decline the draft as it doesn't look as thought he is notable. Lijil (talk) 11:35, 5 August 2025 (UTC)

Early life and education

Pavlin was born in 1970 in Brežice, in what was then Yugoslavia. He studied economics at the University of Ljubljana and later completed doctoral studies in dramatic arts at the University of Arts in Belgrade, focusing on film and television production.[2]

Career

Early professional activities

Before focusing on independent film production, Pavlin worked in television, advertising, cinema distribution, and festival organisation in Slovenia. In later interviews, he described this period as formative for understanding both the creative and economic dimensions of audiovisual production.[3]

Film and television production

Pavlin produced his first widely recognised feature film with A Trip (Izlet, 2011), directed by Nejc Gazvoda. The film premiered at the Sarajevo Film Festival and won several awards at the Festival of Slovenian Film, contributing to its international visibility.[4]

He later co-produced the Greek film Apples (2020), directed by Christos Nikou. The film opened the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival and was selected as Greece’s submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.[5]

In 2022, Pavlin co-produced Ashkal: The Tunisian Investigation, which premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival.[6]

Whites Wash at Ninety

In 2025, Pavlin produced Whites Wash at Ninety (Belo se pere na devetdeset), directed by Marko Naberšnik and based on the autobiographical novel by Bronja Žakelj. The novel had been a major bestseller in Slovenia prior to its adaptation, and the film was widely anticipated as one of the largest domestic productions of the decade.[7]

According to interviews, Pavlin secured the adaptation rights early in the novel’s popularity cycle and developed the project as a large-scale national production, involving extensive period reconstruction and a broad ensemble cast. Media coverage emphasised the challenges of adapting a personal literary work into a feature film while retaining its emotional tone.[8]

The film premiered at the Sarajevo Film Festival and was later released theatrically in Slovenia, where it achieved exceptional box-office results for a domestic production. By early 2026, it had surpassed multiple audience milestones and received three “zlata rola” (Golden Reel) awards for cinema attendance.[9]

Critical reception in Slovenia highlighted the film’s production design, performances, and appeal to a broad audience, while discussions in the press also addressed the difficulties of condensing a multi-layered literary narrative into a feature-length film. Audience response was described as particularly strong, with commentators noting the film’s resonance across generations.[10]

Festival of European Film Brežice

Since 2024, Pavlin has been involved in the founding and artistic direction of the Festival of European Film Brežice, an annual event held in the town of Brežice. The festival was established with the aim of presenting contemporary European cinema in a regional setting outside Slovenia’s principal cultural centres.[11]

The inaugural edition took place in 2024 and featured a curated programme of European films that had previously screened at major international festivals. Coverage described the event as notable for bringing internationally recognised films and guests to a smaller Slovenian town, drawing attention to the region’s historical connection to cinema.[12]

The second edition in 2025 expanded the programme and introduced audience awards. Media reports highlighted strong attendance and the festival’s emphasis on direct engagement between filmmakers and viewers through discussions and public events. Interviews with Pavlin described the festival as a long-term cultural initiative rather than a commercial showcase, with a focus on accessibility and decentralisation of film culture in Slovenia.[1]

Recognition

In 2012, Pavlin was selected as Slovenia’s representative for European Film Promotion’s Producers on the Move programme at the Cannes Film Festival.[2]
