Brett Wetton is an American business executive and former collegiate and professional indoor football player who serves as Chief Executive Officer of Horsepower Ventures Group.[1] He played football and competed in track and field at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he served as co-captain of both teams and was a two-time All-American in the weight throw.[2][3]

Early life and education

Wetton grew up in Geneva, Nebraska. At Geneva High School (1990–1996), he was a four-year letter winner in football, basketball, and track and field.[4]

He attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney from 1996 to 2001, where he was a dual-sport athlete competing in football and track and field. He served as co-captain of both the NCAA Division II football team and the track and field team.[5] In track and field, he competed in hammer throw, shot put, 35-pound weight throw, and discus, and was a two-time All-American in the weight throw and hammer throw.[2] Wetton holds multiple Field House records at UNK in the weight throw.[3] He was selected as a UNK Homecoming finalist in 2000.[6]

Beyond athletics, Wetton was involved in the Leadership Development Council, served as Student Government Liaison, and participated in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.[7] He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Administration in 2001.[7]

He later completed graduate coursework in Student Counseling and Personnel Services at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.[7]

Athletic career

Collegiate career

At the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Wetton played on the Lopers football team as an offensive lineman, playing right tackle, and was named co-captain.[5][8] He competed in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) and was named to the all-conference football team in 2000.[5] As a senior, Wetton did not allow a single sack.[8] He was a four-year letter winner in football from 1996 to 2000.[2]

Professional indoor football career

After college, Wetton pursued a career in professional indoor football, playing for several teams in the National Indoor Football League (NIFL) and af2.

In 2002, Wetton joined the Tri-City Diesel of the NIFL, where he started all games at right guard and was named to the All-Pacific Conference Team as an offensive lineman.[2] In 2003, he played for the Omaha Beef, starting at right guard in all 16 of the team's games and again earning All-Pacific Conference honors.[2][3] He was also named to the NIFL All-Star team in 2003.[8]

In 2004, Wetton had a successful season with the Green Bay Blizzard of af2.[8] He returned to the Tri-City Diesel for the 2004 NIFL season.[2] In 2005, he rejoined the Omaha Beef and was again named an NIFL All-Star.[8]

Wetton's indoor football performance earned him tryouts with NFL teams, including the Seattle Seahawks in January 2003 and the St. Louis Rams.[8]

In 2006, Wetton signed with the Rapid City Flying Aces of the NIFL as an offensive tackle.[8]

Post-playing career involvement in athletics

Following his playing career, Wetton has remained involved in football through volunteer coaching. He has served as a volunteer offensive line coach at the University of Nebraska.[7] He also works as a community mentor in Kearney.[7]

Career

Early career

Wetton began his professional career as an Admissions Counselor at the University of Nebraska at Kearney (2006–2008), where he recruited prospective students from Nebraska and Colorado.[7]

He then worked in pharmaceutical sales as a Territory Sales Representative for Forest Pharmaceuticals (2008–2011) covering the Kearney, Nebraska territory, and continued with Actavis as an Office-Based Specialty Representative (2011–2014).[7]

Medical device sales

In 2015, Wetton joined ZOLL Medical Corporation, where he worked in various roles related to the LifeVest wearable defibrillator until 2025. He held positions including Senior Territory Manager for Nebraska (2015–2020), Field Sales Trainer (2016–2025), and Senior Executive Territory Manager (2020–2025).[7]

Business ventures

Wetton founded Rhodes Unlimited in 2012, a consultancy focused on business development in healthcare and biomedical sectors.[7]

Through Rhodes Unlimited, Wetton served as a business advisor for Avenu Medical, a California-based company specializing in minimally invasive dialysis procedures, which was acquired by Medtronic.[9] He also worked on distribution expansion for Cayenne Medical in Nebraska; Cayenne Medical was later acquired by Zimmer Biomet.[10]

In 2021, he founded Balverth Unlimited LLC.

Current roles

In August 2025, Wetton became President and Managing Director of Horsepower Ventures Group, and was named Chief Executive Officer in December 2025.[1] The firm works with early-stage companies across sectors including real estate, medical technology, insurance, and service-based industries.[1]

He also serves as Vice President of Sponsorships and Board Member at 37 Entertainment Co. (2025–present), a live-events company that produces concerts at university stadiums.[7]

Wetton has transitioned into public speaking, drawing on his experiences in athletics and business. In December 2025, he appeared on the podcast Planet Tyrus to discuss the role of perseverance in success.[11]

Philanthropy

Wetton serves as Vice President of the Nebraska Greats Foundation (2022–present), having previously served as Secretary (2019–2022).[12] The Nebraska Greats Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides assistance to former letter winners from Nebraska colleges and universities who face medical or financial hardship.[12]

He also serves as Secretary of The Mongolian Scholars Fund (2013–present).[7]
