Draft:CachyOS

Arch-based Linux distribution From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

CachyOS is a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux. It incorporates a graphical installation process and pre-configured desktop environments alongside a set of performance-oriented modifications. These include the use of a customized kernel and the maintenance of separate package repositories compiled with x86-64-v3, x86-64-v4 and Zen4+ instruction set extensions. [1]

  • Comment: Content like “aims to combine Arch's power and flexibility with out-of-the-box usability, and performance optimizations” and “Due to its focus on out-of-the-box driver support, ease of installation, and performance optimization, CachyOS has quickly gained a large degree of popularity” is RIDICULOUSLY promotional. It utilizes the rolling release schedule and repositories of Arch Linux, and periodically releases updated installation media to assist users with configuring new features during setup. The distribution provides both a standard desktop edition and a handheld edition aimed at handheld game consoles, alongside an upcoming server edition for NAS, workstations, and server environments.[2][3]

History

CachyOS was first released on July 3, 2021,[4] by German developer Peter Jung (ptr1337), alongside co-developer Vladislav Nepogodin (vnepogodin). The project began when Peter was experimenting with and contributing to the cacULE scheduler alongside its developer, Hamad. They chose the name "CachyOS" as a reference to an earlier name for the scheduler.[5]

During 2024, traffic for CachyOS installation increased sharply owing to its early discovery. This growth continued through 2025, and it is reported that CachyOS has delivered 11 petabytes of data, had 1.9 million unique visitors and up to 133,000 ISO downloads per month.[6]

According to PC Games Hardware, CachyOS achieved a 2.54 percent share of the Linux market on Steam in its first year.[7] In July 2025, it became the most popular distribution on DistroWatch.[8][9][10]

On December 3, 2025, CachyOS was granted a $250 per month sponsorship from Framework Computer as part of a batch of sponsorships towards open source software, who recognized the distribution was excelling in benchmarks.[11]

In January 2026, the Open Gaming Collective (OCG) formed to centralize efforts around critical software components employed for gaming on Linux based systems.[12] CachyOS did not opt in to this collective, with Peter stating they did not see benefits that would flow through to CachyOS, and concerns around the initiative "rushing" to find new maintainers after removing a prominent member of their team.[13]

As of March 2026, CachyOS is the most popular desktop distribution on ProtonDB, overtaking Arch Linux.[14][15]

Features

CachyOS recompiles Arch Linux packages for the x86-64-v3 and x86-64-v4 and Zen4+ architectures, delivering performance uplifts.[16][17] Access to these packages is achieved through pacman repositories which can be added to an existing Arch Linux installation. CachyOS also provides access to the Arch User Repository (AUR), a collection of unofficial community-maintained source packages shipped by Arch Linux, using the paru package manager. Octopi is also provided as a GUI alternative to both of these, with the CachyOS Package Manager providing a GUI targeted towards CachyOS recompiled packages.

CachyOS ships with a custom kernel, which utilizes enhancements, configurations and patches from upstream.[18] Several variants of the kernel are available, and can be installed and managed using the included CachyOS Kernel Manager software.[19]

While not provided with the base install, proton-cachyos-slr, a fork of Valve's Proton is maintained by the team that integrates features not otherwise available in the official versions, such as additional patching, video and audio codecs, and early hot fixes and workarounds for games. It can be installed through the CachyOS Hello software, which provides an option to install several gaming focused packages and software such as Steam, Lutris and the Heroic Games Launcher.[20][21]

Installation

CachyOS provides a graphical installer via Calamares to aid users in configuring their installation. Installation of CachyOS requires an internet connection, as no offline installer is available. A new CLI installer is in development, inspired by manjaro-architect.[22]

CachyOS' available bootloaders are GRUB, systemd-boot, rEFInd, and Limine. Configuration for each is generated during installation.[23]

Supported filesystems include XFS, BTRFS, ext4, ZFS, F2FS, and Bcachefs. The CachyOS developers have recommended using BTRFS as the default filesystem, as it is considered stable with useful features. XFS or EXT4 are suggested for a simple and fast filesystem.[24]

During installation, users can select from several pre-configured desktop environments or window managers. KDE Plasma, GNOME, COSMIC, Niri, Cinnamon, Budgie, Mate, Xfce4, LXQT, LXDE, UKUI, Hyprland, Sway, Wayfire, i3 Window Manager, Qtile, bspwm and Openbox are made available.[25]

Reception

CachyOS is often compared to Arch Linux and distributions based on it such as EndeavorOS, as well as gaming focused distributions such as Bazzite and SteamOS.[26][27] Benchmarks have found measurable performance increments over other distributions in particular workloads.[28][29]

The installation process has been described as easier and with more options for customization than the alternative methods presented in Arch Linux.[30] The lack of an offline installer has been criticized, as successful installations are dependent on a reliable internet connection.[31]

There has been a rise in popularity and recommendations of CachyOS on Reddit and in online forums discussing Linux distributions.[32] Despite this, it has been recommended that users who are new to Linux should be cautious with selecting CachyOS, as Arch Linux based distributions often expect a degree of experience and familiarity with aspects of the ecosystem to troubleshoot underlying issues beyond what provided GUI helpers can achieve.[33]
