History

The company's origins date to 1944, when Construtora Pereira de Souza was founded by engineers Caio Luiz Pereira de Souza and Henrique Pegado.[1] In 1955, Construcap Engenharia was founded by engineers Júlio Capobianco, José Mandacaru Guerra, John Ulic Burke Jr., José Ribeiro do Valle and Iório Adami.[1] In 1972, the merger of Construtora Pereira de Souza and Construcap Engenharia created Construcap CCPS Engenharia e Comércio S.A.[1]

In 2012, Construcap and Fluor Corporation formed the joint venture CFPS Engenharia e Projetos S.A. to pursue engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) projects in Brazil.[2] The same year, 2012,Exame reported that Construcap was the most profitable construction company in Brazil in the magazine's Melhores e Maiores ranking.[3]

Projects and recognition

Construcap states that its activities are divided among buildings, industrial projects and infrastructure.[1] Projects listed by the company include the expansion and refurbishment of the departure and arrival areas of Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro;[4] works for Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM);[5] the Três Lagoas thermoelectric plant in Mato Grosso do Sul;[6] the Goiasa Goiatuba ethanol-distillery complex in Goiás;[7] the Temple of Solomon in São Paulo;[8] renovation works at Mineirão in Belo Horizonte;[9] and civil works on São Paulo Metro Line 5–Lilac.[10]

The company's awards page states that the Construcap/Walbridge consortium received an ENR Global Awards 2015 prize for the Goiana automotive plant in Pernambuco.[11] Engineering News-Record also profiled the project, describing it as the Goiana Jeep Assembly Plant for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.[12]

Concessions

In September 2021, Construcap won the auction for a 30-year concession covering public-use areas of Cantareira State Park and Alberto Löfgren State Park (Horto Florestal) in São Paulo.[13][14] In 2022, operations in those parks were assumed by Urbia, a company in the Construcap group.[15]

In 2025, Construcap joined Spain's OHLA and Copasa in the Nova Estrada Real consortium, which won the 30-year BR-040/495 highway concession between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.[16] Later that year, the concession began operating under the name Elovias.[17]

In July 2016, Roberto Ribeiro Capobianco, then president of Construcap, was arrested during Operation Abismo, the 31st phase of Operation Car Wash, in connection with allegations involving the Petrobras Cenpes project and transfers by Construcap to Legend Engenheiros Associados.[18] In August 2020, the Federal Regional Court of the 4th Region acquitted Capobianco, overturning the earlier conviction on the grounds that the evidence was insufficient to sustain the charges.[19]
