Due to licensing and legislative restrictions, Frootbat operates solely as a marketplace in the United States; however, in Asian and European markets, it functions as a hybrid marketplace with both DTC (Direct to Consumer) and marketplace capabilities. This means that in the United States, products are fulfilled from licensed liquor stores in various states as part of the Frootbat partner network.[4][5][6]

History and timeline

Founded as a response to the bourbon boom in the early to mid 2010's [7] and as a solution to the complex nature of liquor shipping laws in the United States, Frootbat's e-commerce website was launched in 2018 as an answer to increased demand and shortened supply of allocated whiskey, providing a means to democratizing access to "rare and hard-to-find" products[8].

Today, Frootbat is one of few global marketplaces specializing in the secondary supply of fine, rare, and hard-to-find bourbon and whiskey. [9]

San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2024 Gold Medal

In 2024, Frootbat entered the inaugural single-barrel club category at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Their entry, an Elijah Craig Single Barrel Strength Bourbon Whiskey titled 'Raiders of the Lost Oak' was awarded a Gold Medal in its category and received a score of 90/100. [10] [11]
