Kaliyammal Prakasan is an Indian Tamil politician and social activist from the State of Tamil Nadu, India. She is known for her political work in the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), where she served as State Coordinator of the Women's Wing, and later joined the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in 2026.[1][2]

Early life
Kaliyammal Prakasan is from Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, India. She is from the Hindu Paravar Community. Public election records describe her as a graduate and identify fish trading and fisheries-related activities among her occupational background.[3] Maritime and fisheries context: Kaliyammal's public profile has often been associated with fishing-community livelihoods and coastal economic issues. Tamil Nadu's coastal belt has historically supported fishing, pearl-diving, maritime trade, and marine-resource industries that have played an important role in the region's economy and culture. Several historic coastal communities of Tamil Nadu, including those concentrated along the Gulf of Mannar and Coromandel Coast, have contributed to maritime trade, navigation, fisheries, and pearl fisheries dating back to the Sangam period.[4][5][6]
Political career
Naam Tamilar Katchi
Kaliyammal joined the Naam Tamilar Katchi and rose to become the party's Women's Wing State Coordinator. She gained prominence through public meetings, grassroots campaigns, and speeches on social and political issues.[7] She contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Chennai North, the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election from Poompuhar, and the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Mayiladuthurai as an NTK candidate.[8][9]
Resignation from NTK: In February 2025, Kaliyammal resigned from NTK, citing prevailing circumstances. Contemporary reports described her as one of the party's most visible women leaders and noted that she had become widely known for her campaign speeches.[10][11]
Joining AIADMK
On 13 March 2026, Kaliyammal joined the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the presence of party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami. She stated that the decision followed consultations with her associates and expressed confidence in the party's leadership.[12][13]
Advocacy
Throughout her political career, Kaliyammal has spoken on issues affecting women, coastal livelihoods, fishermen, and economically marginalized communities. Her public interventions have frequently focused on social welfare, public safety, and the concerns of traditional fishing populations in coastal Tamil Nadu.[14]
