Phrimpong (born Derrick Frimpong Manso) is a Ghanaian rapper, songwriter, and special needs educator. He gained public attention with his 2016 debut single, "Religion 1", which addressed issues in religious institutions. Outside music, he works as a Special Needs Educator and hosts *The Ausome Show*, a podcast focused on autism awareness and inclusive education.

Early life and education

Phrimpong was born and raised in Kumasi, Ghana. He attended Tweneboah Kodua Senior High School and later the University of Education, Winneba, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Science. In 2025, he completed a Master's degree in Special Education at the University of Cape Coast.[1]

He works as a Special Needs Educator at Al Rayan International School and hosts *The Ausome Show*, a podcast that promotes autism advocacy and inclusive education.

Music career

Phrimpong started rapping competitively in 2009 when he participated in the Freestyle Saturday Rap Show organized by Solid FM in Kumasi, finishing third out of over 400 contestants. In 2010, he won the title of "Best Ashanti Rapper" in a competition held by Okyeame Kwame's 1Mic Entertainment.

In 2016, Phrimpong released "Religion 1", which received increased attention and was reportedly banned by UTV Ghana due to its critical portrayal of misconduct in religious settings.[2]

That same year, he spoke at TEDxAccra about the role of music in youth empowerment.[3] He also appeared at TEDxAccra in 2017 for the Africa Dialogues event.

In 2021, Phrimpong launched *The Possible Project*, a mentorship program aiming to encourage final-year junior high school students in Kumasi to balance their academics and creative talents.[4]

He has performed at several large events, including the Freedom Wave Concert featuring Shatta Wale and Medikal held at the Accra Sports Stadium.[5]

Controversies

In 2021, Phrimpong criticized rapper Yaa Pono over a lyric that he considered disrespectful to Kumasi artists affiliated with the Kumerica movement.[6]

Later that year, he left a live television program following a disagreement with a panelist who made personal remarks about him.[7]

Public views

Phrimpong has spoken about the economic and professional challenges faced by artists from Kumasi, explaining that relocating to Accra has expanded his opportunities.[8]

In 2024, he participated in a rap exchange responding to Nigerian artist Dremo, alongside other Ghanaian rappers supporting Sarkodie’s single "Brag."[9]

Advocacy and philanthropy

Phrimpong advocates for autism awareness through his podcast and educational efforts. He has taken part in initiatives such as:
