Born in Maryland, Student 1 relocated to Minneapolis at age three, where he was raised primarily by his mother, an Ethiopian immigrant who moved to the United States at age 17.[2] He briefly attended community college before deciding to leave academia to pursue a music career, adopting the name "Student 1" as a symbol of lifelong learning and continuous self-improvement.[3]
