Momotaro Jeans (Japanese: 桃太郎 ジーンズ) is a Japanese premium denim brand established in Kojima, Okayama in 2005 and named after the popular Japanese folk tale of Momotarō.[1]

Momotaro often incorporates a signature pink-line selvedge in reference to their “peach” boy namesake (Japanese: 桃 momo).

The brand is known for heavyweight indigo-dyed denim, domestic production in Okayama Prefecture, and its association with Kojima’s development as a global destination for denim manufacturing and tourism.[2][3][4]

The brand ethos is "Made by Hand Without Compromise," which includes the use of Zimbabwean cotton, known for its durability, quality, and unique denim fading characteristics.[5] Momotaro Jeans come with a lifetime warranty.[6][7]

Momotaro Jeans was founded by Hisao Manabe under Japan Blue Co., a textile company established in Kojima, a district of Kurashiki in Okayama Prefecture long associated with textile and uniform production.[3] It focuses on small-scale production and artisanal techniques.[8]

The brand gained international attention among denim enthusiasts during the late 2000s and 2010s as Japanese selvedge denim developed a global following.[9]

Manufacturing and materials

Momotaro Jeans products are manufactured primarily in Kojima, Okayama. Production typically involves multiple local workshops responsible for spinning, dyeing, weaving, sewing, and finishing processes.[10]

The company is known for the use of long-staple Zimbabwean cotton and rope-dyed indigo yarns, producing denim designed to develop distinctive fading patterns over time.[10][8] Many fabrics are woven on vintage shuttle looms, a slower method associated with traditional selvedge denim production.[4]

The brand is also known for their proprietary shade called “TOKUNO BLUE 特濃", a deep indigo coloration developed through repeated dyeing processes.[11]

Design and products

Momotaro Jeans produces jeans, jackets, and related apparel centered on raw and selvedge denim. A recognizable design feature is the pair of white stripes applied to rear pockets on certain models, sometimes referred to as “Battle Stripes".[8]

The brand’s selvedge denim often incorporates pink thread detailing referencing the peach motif associated with the Momotarō folktale.

Product lines typically emphasize durability, aging characteristics, and long-term wear rather than seasonal fashion trends.[12]

Cultural impact

Momotaro Jeans is frequently cited as part of Japan’s premium denim movement, which repositioned jeans as high-craft garments emphasizing traditional manufacturing and material quality.[9][12]

The company’s presence in Kojima contributed to the area’s emergence as an international denim tourism destination, particularly along Kojima Jeans Street, where visitors can observe local production and specialty retailers.[2]
