The Statute Law (Repeals) Act 1977 (c. 18) is an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

As of 2026 the act remains partly in force in the United Kingdom.[2]

Background

The act implemented recommendations contained in the eighth report on statute law revision, by the Law Commission and the Scottish Law Commission.[3]

Provisions

The power conferred by section 4(3) of the act was exercised by the Statute Law Repeals (Isle of Man) Order 1984 (SI 1984/1692).[4]

Repealed enactments

Section 1(1) of the act repealed 434 enactments, listed in parts I to XIX of schedule 1 to the act.[5]

Subsequent developments

The entry relating to the Army Reserve Act 1962 (10 & 11 Eliz. 2. c. 10) in schedule 2 to the act was repealed by section 157(1)(b) of, and part II of schedule 10 to, the Reserve Forces Act 1980, which came into force on 20 April 1980.[6]

Section 3 of, and schedule 3 to, the act were repealed by section 1(1) of, and part IX of schedule 1 to, the Statute Law (Repeals) Act 1995, which came into force on 8 November 1995.[7]

Sections 1(1), 4(2) and in section 4(3), the words from "or the Isle of Man" to the end, and schedule 1 and the entries relating to the Highways Act 1959 (7 & 8 Eliz. 2. c. 25) and the Criminal Justice (Scotland) Act 1963 in schedule 2 to, the act were repealed by group 2 of part IX of schedule 1 to, the Statute Law (Repeals) Act 1998, which came into force on 19 November 1998.[8] The orders in council made under section 4(3) have lapsed because of the repeal made to that section by the 1998 act.[9]
