George Ryan commutations

All other events have both a Wikipedia article on the event and a citation. This addition has neither. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 22:43, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

There hardly needs to be a standalone article when its covered in the main article, i.e. the George Ryan article itself. It's not only covered in the lead, but in the main body. This means we're okay to list it here! Feel free (if you are able) to add an inline citation too!! The Rambling Man (talk) 22:46, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
Just added two sources, found on the Ryan and Burge articles, and verified. Mformatt(So it goes.) 23:04, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

@Matt Campbell: I like the image of STS-107, but it really doesn't meet the year article guidelines. I want to establish consensus. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 09:14, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

Collage thoughts

Please let me know if anyone has any disagreements on the images included in the collage, and I will put it up for vote. Thanks The ganymedian (talk) 22:46, 8 October 2022 (UTC)

Please fix the collage so that the pictures are in correct proportion. If this can't be done, the collage will be removed. Deb (talk) 09:08, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
I feel like we should change the STS-107 photo from the crew to an image of the disintegration. Also, I have a feeling that we should replace the Bam earthquake with the July heat wave in Europe, but I feel like there's a reason that the earthquake is there instead of the heat wave. Correct me if I'm wrong. DementiaGaming (talk) 21:43, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
yes, change the STS-107 photo from the crew to an image of the disintegration, makes a lot more sense. 4me689 (talk) 14:52, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

collage suggestion

out of the 8 images in the 2003 collage, 5 are related to the iraq war, I have a plan to at leash replace three of them. keep the picture of saddam hussein's statue fallen and the picture of the protests but remove the other three and replace them with War in Darfur which was a major armed conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan that went on for 16 years, the 2003 Boumerdès earthquake, which killed over 2,200 people and over 10,000 injured, and Myspace, which was one of the first social media platforms to be created and was one time one of biggest websites on the internet. 4me689 (talk) 14:50, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

@4me689 I also have a plan similar to yours, but my approach may be slightly different. My plan is to only keep the image of the fallen statue and replace all the others. The candidates I have chosen are:
Daegu subway fire
2003 Boumerdès earthquake
2003 European heatwave (which was the deadliest heat wave in recorded and the deadliest natural disaster of 2003)
Mars Express (which was the first Mars probe from Europe Union). Nagae Iku (talk) 15:06, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
I like your plan, keep the image of the fallen statue, and replace all the others with 2003 Boumerdès earthquake, 2003 European heatwave, Myspace, and the Mars Express. 4me689 (talk) 15:08, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
I agree with the choice of myspace over the subway fire Questions? four OLIfanofmrtennant (she/her) 15:11, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
Actually, my personal opinion is that I don't really support MySpace. It completely lost to Facebook after 2010, and I prefer use the Darfur War to replace it. Nagae Iku (talk) 15:17, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
However this is 2003 and really led to the rise of social media if we didnt have myspace then facebook wouldnt have taken over as there would be nothing to take over Questions? four OLIfanofmrtennant (she/her) 15:20, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
@OlifanofmrTennant @4me689 But as far as I know, the first social media in human history was SixDegrees.com, which was born in 1997 and once had 3.5 million registered users. I think it was more revolutionary than MySpace. Personally, I still hope MySpace can be replaced by the Darfur War. I will make 2 versions of the collage later. Nagae Iku (talk) 17:29, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
myspace was revolutionary back in 2003 and most social media platforms (including facebook) wouldn't exist or would not be as popular if it wasn't for myspace. 4me689 (talk) 15:24, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
This is late, but, we have to talk about Myspace. 4me689 said that the website was revolutionary in 2003 - it didn't even reach its peak popularity until much later, so as discussed in the 2006 and 2001 discussions, it is illogical that it should be on here, which brings us back to the Iraq War. I say we replace it with the Battle of Baghdad or the Mission Accomplished speech. DementiaGaming (talk) 21:38, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
That would bring us back to the old version centered around the Iraq War. So why not try replacing that grid with the Darfur War? This conflict resulted in over 300,000 deaths and drew multiple African countries into the conflict, which fits the "international event" criteria very well. Nagae Iku (talk) 22:10, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
Again, we have the peak intensity paradox - the war in Darfur only began in 2003, and it reached its peak intensity in 2006 and 7. DementiaGaming (talk) 22:25, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
2003 Events Collage V2.1
2003 Events Collage V2.2
@4me689 @OlifanofmrTennant @DementiaGaming @The0Quester @The ganymedian @Ryansean071 @Wjfox2005 @Jim Michael 2 The second version of the 2003's collage has been completed, and I invite everyone to express your opinions. If my @ to you is considered harassing behavior, I apologize in advance. And the difference between the two collages is MySpace and War in Darfur. Nagae Iku (talk) 18:57, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
v2.1 as per my previous comments, again it was 2003 and without Myspace most social media platforms would not exist today. 4me689 (talk) 19:19, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
I like the upper one The0Quester (talk) 19:35, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
I also agree with the top version Questions? four OLIfanofmrtennant (she/her) 19:37, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
My opinion is to include at least two or three images centered around Iraq. Of course, keep the statue toppling, but at least include Abu Ghraib and the protests. I also revoke my say on the heat wave. DementiaGaming (talk) 21:08, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your suggestion, DementiaGaming. However, I would like to say that regarding the idea of the European heatwave, I had actually already made a raw collage privately before you suggested it, which included the European heatwave. I believe that a record-breaking disaster that caused 72,000 deaths should not be ignored. Also, you mentioned the need to have at least three grid for Iraq in the collage. I don't think it's necessary as those events can be summarized in a brief introduction. Nagae Iku (talk) 21:25, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
agreed, we don't need the collage being Iraq war-Centric. 4me689 (talk) 21:27, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
@DementiaGaming: The consenses already reached is that only the statue will remain all other images have been decided the only one that its up for discussion is Daegu subway fire or Myspace which it seems has landed on Myspace. Questions? four OLIfanofmrtennant (she/her) 21:49, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
Infact the point of the discussion is making the colladge less Iraqi centric Questions? four OLIfanofmrtennant (she/her) 21:50, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
I may need to clarify that in our later conversation, I shifted my support from the Daegu subway fire to the Darfur War, because I also realized that the Daegu subway fire incident was somewhat localized and did not have enough international impact. On the other hand, the Darfur War had significant international impact, as many African countries were involved in the power struggle between the warring factions, and the war resulted in the deaths of over 300,000 people. The V2.2 version of the collage I made includes an image of a small house destroyed by darfur war. Nagae Iku (talk) 17:47, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
Yeah that works what I had issue with was the inclusion of myspace which seems like we have agreed on includingQuestions? four OLIfanofmrtennant (she/her) 18:02, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
The reason I say this is because I realized that the Algeria earthquake was not that deadly or notable in collage standards and did not draw in international attention. Abu Ghraib was a great scandal with international implications, and so were the protests. At least put Abu Ghraib on the 2004 collage if you do this, and consider replacing the Algeria earthquake with the protests. DementiaGaming (talk) 16:41, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
2003 Events Collage V2.3
According to your strong request, I made this version of the collage and replaced the Mars express and Algeria earthquake to meet your requirements. However, I personally don't like this collage because the events you strongly requested could have been achieved by writing a few more lines in the description below the collage. Also, if there are any events other than the Iraq War that you are not satisfied with, I can replace them at any time. Nagae Iku (talk) 17:30, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
I think this is a great Middle ground, this collage is great. 4me689 (talk) 17:39, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
I prefer the second version but I am okay with the third Questions? four OLIfanofmrtennant (she/her) 17:43, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. The collage looks great. The Mission Accomplished speech and the Battle of Baghdad are also not important enough to be on the collage, so if everybody agrees, this collage should be put on there. DementiaGaming (talk) 18:52, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
update: I have put up the collage V2.3 as per consensus. 4me689 (talk) 21:02, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
Why did you have to change it ? it was perfect as it was (the original one). For sure it was Iraq centric because it was the majors events of the year. I don't like the new collage either, i think my space have nothing to do in it. I don't understand the launch of a social media being in a collage of the majors events of a year when at that time they had no importance and reached the peak of their popularity only years later (For Exemple Facebook for 2004 when it wasn't even avaible for everyone, Twitter for 2006.) This is why Tiktok for exemple isn't in the collage of 2017 Gennicyro4 (talk) 00:22, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
hey @Nagae Iku, you mind replacing the icon of Myspace on the v2.1 with this icon of Myspace that is actually from 2003 https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Myspace.svg 4me689 (talk) 21:40, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Calendar for 2003 removal

I'm confused about why the calendar for 2003 was removed. Can someone tell me why the calendar this year's calendar removed? 2A0A:EF40:5BD:C501:A4D0:1AFF:FE05:7D0F (talk) 16:58, 16 July 2025 (UTC)

Stability

  • Last edit on 1 September 2025, a revert, but other than that no edit warring is in place.

Media

  • All media is correctly tagged with a copyright status, are relevant for the topic and have suitable captions.

Copyvio

  • Earwigs Copyvio Detector points to 87.5%, that is, violation suspected; this is due to a fork of Wikipedia.

Population

  • Why are refugees given so much weight here?
    • I'm really not sure why I started adding that. I figured that besides the populations of countries, the population of people not in their country was relevant. There were a few other types of demographic statistics in this as well, but I eventually removed them. I'm open to reconsidering the refugee stats if you think it's undue, and really it might be worth broader discussion about how to best cover a year's global demographics.
  • This section could be further developed, for example, which country registered the largest population growth rate, what's the gross world product, or the median age.
    • Per above, I think it might be good to have discussion about what's most relevant to the demographics section. For the time being, I think global population is really the only critical fact for "broad coverage", and it has its own section mostly because it doesn't fit anywhere else.

Conflicts

  • I find the sentence: There were 29 armed conflicts in 2003 that caused at least 25 fatalities. very confusing. I suggest a rephrase → There were 29 armed conflicts with at least 25 fatalities in 2003.
    • Changed.
  • Add wikilink to Democratic Republic of the Congo (optional)
  • Add wikilink to insurgencies (optional)
    • Linked DRC, I think insurgency is a common enough word that it would be an WP:OVERLINK.

Internal conflicts

  • Add wikilink to martial law (optional)
  • Add wikilink to Solomon Islands (optional)
    • Linked both.
  • Remove the capitalization from "Sri Lanka Civil War"
    • Fixed.
  • Burundi and Uganda are both located in Africa. Any reason to include them in the Asia paragraph?
    • Removed "In Asia" so it's more generally about changes in internal conflicts.
  • No mention of coup d'états?
    • Covered under changes of leadership in the politics section since they didn't result in active conflicts

International conflicts

  • Add wikilink to Iraq War (optional)
    • Linked.
  • The sentence: The other war between sovereign states, the Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan... reads awkwardly. I suggest a rephrase → The Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan...
    • Done.
  • There could be a sentence about the continuity of the War in Afghanistan.
    • The Taliban insurgency is mentioned at the top of the section (I've now added a link), and suicide bombings are mentioned here under international conflicts
  • No mention that the Second Congo War ended?
    • Added under internal conflicts

Culture

Art and architecture

  • Add wikilink to etchings (optional)
    • Linked.
  • Put quotations in "Old Master".
    • I understand Old Master to be a formal term of art, and this risks coming off as MOS:SCAREQUOTES
  • Add wikilink to SARS epidemic (optional)
    • Linked
  • Clarify that Tillya Tepe's treasure was rediscovered.
    • I changed it to "The lost treasure of Tillya Tepe was found to be in Saddam Hussein's possession.", which reads more clearly to me.

Media

  • All good here

Sports

  • No mention of the finalists of the UEFA Euro 2004 and instead of a play-off match?
    • I'm not very knowledgeable about sports, but my reading of the source was that the upset match was the stand-out event in the sport that year. And as far as I can tell, the play-offs took place in 2003 while UEFA Euro 2004 took place in 2004.
  • I think the only major sport missing is basketball.
    • I could be mistaken, but I understand basketball to have more limited reach globally, and I didn't see any major events that make 2003's basketball stand out from others. I'd consider basketball more appropriate for 2003 in sports, or 2003 in the United States for the NBA specifically

Economy

  • This section could be further developed, for example, it could mention exchange rates and stock exchanges.
    • Is this something covered prominently in reviews of 2003 such that it necessary for broad coverage? I didn't encounter it, but I also didn't do super in-depth research for the year's economy.
  • The dot-com bubble ended in 2003, there could be sentence saying that.
    • This was covered in the sources about 2002 and is mentioned in that article. Our current article on the dot-com bubble doesn't mention anything happening in 2003 except one corporation changing its name.
  • There could be a more direct mention of the 2000s energy crisis.
    • To me, this seems more applicable to the decade as a whole while the specific effects on oil prices are better covered in the 2003 article.

Environment and weather

  • Second-hottest year on record, but what's the temperature?
    • I'm not exactly sure how they determine the average, or whether they use a single measurement or multiple measurements.
  • Seems strange that the only country in South America affected by severe cold weather is Peru. I don't have any suggestion without further context, but worth noting in this review.
  • Likewise with Zimbabwe.
    • Both Peru and Zimbabwe were singled out in the NOAA source as areas that were affected.
  • Is Earth Observation Summit the most important conference on climate change in 2003? From a quick search, I could find World Climate Change Conference, Moscow and 2003 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
    • Yeah, these probably aren't that significant in terms of the year. I'll remove the Earth Observation Summit. These are probably best covered at 2003 in the environment.
  • Add wikilink to well-head (optional)
    • Linked.

Health

  • Add wikilink to polio (optional)
  • Add wikilink to all the African countries (optional)
  • Add wikilink to Ebola (optional)
  • Spell out UNAIDS or put a wikilink.
    • All links added.

Politics and law

International politics

  • How so separate zones for the region of Central America?
    • I don't understand the question.

Domestic politics

Crime and international law

  • Which UNSC's resolutions?
    • I had previously removed these for brevity, but I've restored them.

Religion

  • Add wikilink to proselytizing (optional)
    • Linked.
  • This section seems a tad too much Western-centric, even the paragraph about Hinduism is about how two Westerns impacted the Hindu world;
  • Further, only voodooism (with one small sentence) and Hinduism are talked about other than abrahamic religions; no mention of, for example, Buddhism or a more extensive mention of folk religions?
    • Were there any significant developments in non-Abrahamic religions that had attention on a global level?

Science

  • Split the following sentence into two and correct the grammar mistake in the middle of it ("...was described study of..."): Among nonhuman fossils, the dinosaur Rajasaurus narmadensis was described study of Microraptor gui fossils determined that it had asymmetrical feathers on its limbs that supported a theory of arboreal evolution for dinosaurs
    • Fixed the list by adding a comma

Space exploration and astronomy

  • How were the Jupiter's, Neptune's and Saturn's moons discovered?
    • As I understand it, the discovery of outer planet moons is just standard astronomy.

Technology

  • Multiple sources describe Sobig as a worm, not as a virus;
    • Fixed
  • No mentions of iTunes Store's launch or Blu-ray's prototype release?
    • The iTunes Store is described under media developments (though I'm open to moving it down if it seems more like a technological advance), and based on the Blu-ray article it looks like that wasn't a significant development until 2005 or 2006.

Events

  • State that Dolly was a clone of a sheep instead of a mammal, something like this: Dolly, a cloned sheep, dies;
    • Appears to be fixed.
  • Specify that Pong Su is a ship;
    • Fixed.
  • Standardize 2003 Boumerdès earthquake as per other mentions of earthquakes;
    • Done.
  • Put italics in VLS-1.
    • Fixed.

Births and deaths

Nobel Prizes

  • Why is this a separate section?
  • It needs sources for all statements.
    • I really don't know what to tell you here. It's probably improper and I'd be fine with removing it, but this appears on every year article and I guarantee you that if it's removed a bunch of randos will keep trying to add it back because consistency is all they're worried about.

Sourcing

  • Peter (2004) p. 625, OK
  • Peter (2004) pp. 627-628, OK
  • Sparks (2004) p. 157, OK
  • Roger (2012) puts Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World at 5th place; The A.V. Club's (2004) critics puts it at 7th and out of top 10 thrice; and Scott (2003) puts it at 1st. In my view, it is undue weight to name as one of the three movies that were the most critically acclaimed.
    • My thought process is that appearing on these lists at all verifies that it was critically acclaimed, and that ones appearing on several lists are due for inclusion. It's not ideal though, and I'm open to other ways to cover media in a given year.
  • Lewis (2003) p. 487, OK
