Notability?
How is notability established? Do sub-sets of the Irish public library system have independent notability? There are 330 library branches (spanning 31 local authorities) in Ireland. Some, like the Midleton Library building (formerly Midleton Town Hall) or Inchicore Public Library (an artdeco/O'Rourke building listed on Dublin City Council's Record of Protected Structures) or Waterford City Library (on the RPS for Waterford Council area), may be notable as the building(s) from which they operate have have been assigned protected status. Others, to my understanding, would need to meet WP:NORG, WP:GNG or some other norm. To my mind, the sources in this title (mostly trivial passing-mentions and primary/non-independent sources) do not establish notability. Am I missing something? - I made this from a redlink on List of libraries in the Republic of Ireland, which only lists 36 libraries. I thought the article would definitely be notable because it was one of the libraries without an article yet that was redlinked (due to the wikidata page that already existed) and since it was down as the library service for the entire county of carlow, I thought that it was definitely notable but just hadn't been made yet. I did just edit the article to add more sources, but if you still think the article isn't notable enough, feel free to delete it. Sorry about this! Finnfrog99 (talk) 22:09, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
- Hi @Finnfrog99. Thanks for your note. Some thoughts (in no particular order):
- Topics with a Wikidata entry are not all notable.
- A red link (especially one created just a few weeks ago and based on the behaviour of a specific Wikidata link template) doesn't automatically warrant its own title.
- The building which holds the Carlow County Library and Carlow County Museum may be notable. As it included in Carlow Council's Record of Protected Structures. And there are sufficient sources to expand on the buildings history/architecture/etc.
- Whatever about the main Carlow library building, I don't think the Carlow library "service" has independent notability. Not of the parent org (Libraries Ireland) or the building. Certainly the sources don't establish WP:NORG or represent WP:SIGCOV.
- Personally I'd recommend merging/redirecting the stuff on the library to the article which currently covers the building.
- Thanks. Guliolopez (talk) 12:31, 18 March 2026 (UTC)

Merge
Hi. As above, I propose to merge the content on the Carlow County Library Service (which I don't think meets WP:NORG or WP:SIGCOV) to the article on the building which contains the Carlow County Library (which does appear to meet WP:NBUILDING). Namely the Carlow County Museum article. Effectively creating a section for the library in the article on the building which contains the library and museum. And to expand the museum article to include more information on that building. And I propose to redirect both Carlow County Library Service and Carlow County Library to that section. (Otherwise I don't think the library "service" (the org) has independent notability. And while the building containing the "main" library (the former convent) may be notable, we already have an article covering that.) Guliolopez (talk) 14:47, 20 March 2026 (UTC)
- Sounds good!
- If I knew the building already had its own article, I probably wouldntve made this lol Finnfrog99 (talk) 14:51, 20 March 2026 (UTC)
- OK. Thanks. I'll see if there are any other thoughts before progressing. (Also, FWIW, maybe check for possible or actual WP:BACKLINKS before creating a title. And consider both WP:NOTABILITY and whether a topic should be covered WP:WITHIN an existing title before rushing to create a new/standalone title.) As discussed elsewhere, not every topic warrants its own title. Thanks. Guliolopez (talk) 16:18, 20 March 2026 (UTC)
