Tricolor flag
I find the Flag of Afghanistan#Islamic Republic tricolor being above the other historical flags weird. Its a flag of a no longer existing state (Islamic Republic of Afghanistan) and should be placed with the other historical flags and maybe have its own article the same way the old flag of Syria has one 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 10:29, 21 January 2025 (UTC)
- It is still included as a current flag in a lot of encyclopedic sources, and Wikipedia policy is to give appropriate weight to majority and significant minority viewpoints. There's lots of citations to back that up in the section—that's not something we can suppress entirely. TEMPO156 (talk) 00:41, 23 January 2025 (UTC)

- The Taliban currently exercises de facto control over most of Afghanistan, but it still lacks broad international recognition as the official government of Afghanistan. The United Nations continues to recognize the credentials of representatives from the previous Islamic Republic, and the tricolor flag is still widely used by Afghan communities, athletes, and parts of the diaspora. For that reason, I do not think the tricolor should be treated as only a historical flag at this time. Massoudhemmat (talk) 18:00, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
Proposal to show both Afghan flags with explanation
I would like to propose discussing whether the article should present both flags with clear explanation.
The Islamic Emirate flag is the de facto flag currently used by the authorities inside Afghanistan. However, the tricolor flag continues to be used internationally in some contexts, including Afghanistan’s UN representation, some diplomatic missions, sports teams, diaspora communities, and by many Afghans themselves.
There are also reports that some public displays of the tricolor inside Afghanistan have faced restrictions or reprisals since 2021, which suggests the issue remains politically and socially contested.
Because both flags still have notable real-world usage, presenting both with proper context may better reflect neutrality and the current situation than showing only one flag without explanation. Massoudhemmat (talk) 18:15, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
Urgent Request: Correct the Misrepresentation of Afghanistan’s National Flag on Wikipedia – Remove Taliban Emblem as “National Flag”
Wikipedia is misleading the world. On the page titled “Flag of Afghanistan,” the encyclopedia currently presents the plain white flag of the Taliban — the so-called Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan — as the national flag of Afghanistan. This is not a neutral presentation of facts. It is a distortion that grants undeserved legitimacy to a regime that seized power by force, remains unrecognized by almost the entire international community, and is still designated a terrorist organization by several countries. The facts are clear and should be stated without apology. As of mid-2026, only one country — Russia — has formally recognized the Taliban government. No other United Nations member state has granted it diplomatic recognition. The United Nations continues to list the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The black-red-green tricolour with the national emblem remains the flag flown at the United Nations, used by the majority of Afghan diplomatic missions, carried at the Olympic Games, and displayed by the Afghan diaspora around the world. That tricolour is not a relic. It is the flag of the internationally recognized state of Afghanistan. The white Shahada flag is the banner of a group that overthrew that state by force in August 2021 and has since ruled through repression, particularly against women and girls. Presenting the Taliban’s flag as the official national flag of Afghanistan erases this distinction and misleads millions of readers who turn to Wikipedia for accurate information. Wikipedia’s own policies demand neutrality, verifiability, and a clear separation between de facto control and international legitimacy. The current page fails those standards. By placing the Taliban flag in the primary position and treating its unilateral “adoption” as equivalent to a legitimate national change, the article softens a contested reality into an appearance of normalcy. This is not encyclopedic. It is misleading. The correct approach is straightforward. The black-red-green tricolour must be restored as the principal flag associated with Afghanistan in international contexts. The Taliban’s white flag, if shown at all, belongs under a clearly labelled subsection that states without ambiguity that the regime has received almost no diplomatic recognition and that the tricolour remains the flag used by the United Nations and most international bodies. Anything less continues to misinform the public. Wikipedia claims to be a free encyclopedia that anyone can edit and that aims to present the sum of human knowledge with accuracy. On this page, it is currently doing the opposite. It is presenting the symbol of an unrecognized armed group as the flag of a sovereign nation. That must be corrected — immediately and without equivocation. The world does not accept the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan. Wikipedia should not pretend otherwise. ~2026-42006-09 (talk) 17:25, 28 July 2026 (UTC)
