Gold Crown from Cheonmachong
Gold Crown from Cheonmachong
  • Source: As President Lee Jae Myung and US President Donald Trump held talks on the sidelines of the APEC summit, Lee presented Trump with South Korea’s highest state honor and presented a replica of an ancient Korean crown, the South Korean presidential office said Wednesday. The Korea Herald
  • Source: President Lee also presented Trump with a specially gilded replica of the Gold Crown from Cheonmachong, a Silla Kingdom (57 BC- AD 935) artifact considered to be the tallest, widest and most ornate of Korea’s surviving ancient crowns. (same source as above)
  • Source: The tree and antler motifs symbolize a link between heaven and earth, the jade represents primitive life, and the pendants signify the fruit of life. Kyunghyang Shinmun

  • @KimYubin: the article itself needs cleanup; grammar issues and some POV. Could you handle it? Article needs to be presentable before acceptable for DYK. grapesurgeon (talk) 07:29, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
    • @Grapesurgeon: I have finished clean-up. Also, I changed the page name to Gold Crown from Cheonmachong. KimYubin (talk) 11:07, 16 July 2026 (UTC)
  • Full review needed. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:33, 9 September 2026 (UTC)
  • Article is new enough, is just long enough, QPQ done. Image seems viewable at this scale and appropriately licenced. This was a translation, some attribution is still needed. Per Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia#Translating from other language Wikimedia projects, the edit history should explicitly mention ko:천마총 금관, not just the talkpage.
On the text and translation, there are many areas where this article seems to very closely paraphrase the sources. For example, "It is considered as one of the finest Silla crowns" is very close to "the Cheonmachong gold crown is regarded as one of the finest Silla gold crowns". (There's also probably a better way to word this, I couldn't access the source but the body's "It is considered as the largest and most magnificent Silla crown" is a bit clearer.) Similarly, "The tree and antler motifs represent the connection between heaven and earth while the jade symbolizes the origin of life and the pendants represent the fruit of life" is very close to "The tree and antler motifs symbolize a link between heaven and earth, the jade represents primitive life, and the pendants signify the fruit of life."
I welcome input on this if wrong, but "The inner crown and items used for wearing the crown were discovered outside the coffin with other goods" seems to reflect the standalone sentence "금관 안에 쓰는 내관이나 관을 쓰는데 필요한 물건들이 모두 널(관) 밖에서 다른 껴묻거리(부장품)들과 함께 발견되었다", and "Two leaf-shaped pendants hang from the lower part of the crown" seems a very literal "밑으로는 나뭇잎 모양의 늘어진 드리개(수식) 2가닥이 달려있다."
There are a couple of smaller tweaks also worth making, such as explaining that Cheonmachong is a tomb (as written it reads as a town), shifting (or at least duplicating) the designation sentence from the lead to the body, and including in the article the years the crown is thought to be from (shortly after 500 presumably given the theorised wearers). On a very minor point the See also link seems easily worked into the lead and body.
On the hooks, ALT0 is supported although the parenthetical should probably specify the original is pictured. ALT1 is in the source, but not clear in the article both in terms of height and in being larger than ancient crowns outside of Silla (both worth adding). ALT2 is interesting but has close paraphrasing as mentioned before. CMD (talk) 13:09, 11 September 2026 (UTC)
  • Chipmunkdavis, thanks for your review. The article is not a translation of the Korean version; I wrote a significant part of the article in English & translated it into Korean. I have paraphrased the sources as much as possible; I would appreciate other editors' help if more paraphrasing is needed. I have also tweaked the article following your suggestion. KimYubin (talk) 10:55, 12 September 2026 (UTC)
  • What does "translation" refer to in the initial edit summary? This is an example of why clear attribution helps, so I am not guessing at the wrong source. CMD (talk) 11:34, 12 September 2026 (UTC)
  • I guess the creator of the article (Mar del Este) translated it from the Korean version; the reviewer of the article (A412) mentioned that it was translated in the edit history. Do I need to mention ko:천마총 금관 in the edit history again? Also, is the content of the article okay? KimYubin (talk) 12:28, 12 September 2026 (UTC)
  • If the initial trnalsation was from Korean but the later one was to Korea, then no need to mention it again. The close paraphrasing needs rewriting, ideally there isn't a sentence to sentence alignment, or at least not so many. See WP:FIXCLOSEPARA. The summary of whether it was the king or his brother is a good example here of obviously not paraphrased text, it states the substance of the source without copying. CMD (talk) 04:58, 13 September 2026 (UTC)
  • Chipmunkdavis, I have reread all the sources and paraphrased what I thought were close paraphrasing. Earwig gives "violation unlikely". KimYubin (talk) 08:36, 13 September 2026 (UTC)
  • The parts that are still close are "Believed to have been created in the early 6th century"/"believed to have been crafted in the early 6th century", "The inner crown and items used for wearing the crown were discovered outside the coffin with other burial goods"/"금관 안에 쓰는 내관이나 관을 쓰는데 필요한 물건들이 모두 널(관) 밖에서 다른 껴묻거리(부장품)들과 함께 발견되었다", "The excavation of Cheonmachong took place from April 6 to December 4, 1973"/"The excavation of Cheonmachong was conducted for eight months from April 6 to December 4, 1973", "earrings, chest decorations, bracelets, rings, and belts. This reflects Silla's belief in the afterlife where gold was thought to guide the soul on its journey to the next world"/"earrings, chest ornaments, bracelets, rings and belts. Such lavish burial offerings reveal the ancient kingdom’s faith in the afterlife, where the brilliance of gold might illuminate the soul’s passage into the next world" (the list is probably okay on its own).
Some parts of the description are also close, but they are probably fine under WP:LIMITED. That said, it might be nice to include some more information from 신라 금관의 성분 조성 분석 to complement the number of gold pendants. CMD (talk) 23:56, 15 September 2026 (UTC)
  • Chipmunkdavis, I believe there are limited ways to paraphrase the mentioned sentences, but I paraphrased them as much as I could. KimYubin (talk) 04:35, 16 September 2026 (UTC)
  • The aim is not to paraphrase, but to present the facts in an independent manner. For example, for "Believed to have been created in the early 6th century", there's no need to use that format. The core fact is the likely date, which could be simplified as far as "Likely from the early 6th century", and that would fit well with the identity sentence, for example, "Likely from the early 6th century,Ref, the identify of the owner of the tomb it was found in..." CMD (talk) 00:53, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
  • Chipmunkdavis, I have changed the sentence according to your suggestion. I believe the close paraphrasing problems have been fixed. I hope this nomination is passed soon as it is close to being timed out. KimYubin (talk) 01:42, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
  • With that concern in mind, I've made some further c/es. I do not believe these are too substantive for my review, but a promoter is welcome to double check. The rest of the review per my initial comment. As mentioned, the image works. I like ALT2, but I can see why a promoter may prefer ALT0 (promoter may take or reject my suggestion that the parenthetical confirms the image is the original rather than the replica).
