Possible Move
Given the fact the shortened version of the name has become common name for reliable sources, I was wondering if we should drop the Ortho and move the article to Hantavirus. ~2026-20372-26 (talk) 02:34, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
- I've thought about this too. The issue is that "hantavirus" refers not just to members of Orthohantavirus but to all members of Hantaviridae. "Hantavirus" redirects to the genus though since usually when people are talking about hantaviruses they are talking about the rodent ones in Orthohantavirus (even before the current outbreak). I wonder if the family were to have a more developed article, then should "hantavirus" redirect to the family or should the family article be titled "Hantavirus"? Note that the "Coronavirus" article is in a similar situation to this, but it's based at the subfamily level when maybe it should be at the family level. Velayinosu (talk) 03:36, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
- I think it's telling that there is no article called simply "hantavirus" and that this article almost exclusively uses "hantavirus" in the body. If we are concerned about the category, it seems like the better approach would be to name this article "hantavirus", note the official name, and point to Hantaviridae for the family, perhaps with a disambiguation note. It's hard for me to overstate how much virology is not my area, so there may be other options or I may be misunderstanding the classifications, but based on WP:COMMONNAME, it does seem that this article should be simply "hantavirus". Dustinscottc (talk) 16:42, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
- Lets move it ~2026-12784-59 (talk) 21:24, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
- Since this move has already been made, should the article's text and the infobox also reflect the change (i.e, changing the respective texts from Orthohantavirus to simply "Hantavirus"), with the name being Orthohantavirus in said text and infobox at the time of this comment? GingerMan Irindu10 07:57, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
- In my opinion: the lead sentence is fine, and the virusbox name should not be changed. Velayinosu (talk) 01:11, 18 May 2026 (UTC)

Orthohantavirus → Hantavirus – Most coverage by reliable sources has referred to this as simply 'Hantavirus' instead of 'Orthohantavirus'. Hantavirus is currently a redirect to this article. Articles related to Orthohantavirus also use the term Hantavirus instead, such as Hantavirus infection and MV Hondius hantavirus outbreak. This should be moved per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:CONSISTENT. — EarthDude (Talk) 19:59, 8 May 2026 (UTC)
- The article also claims the Orthohantavirus is more specific than the Hantavirus, and the article uses "Hantavirus" throughout ~2026-27901-00 (talk) 20:49, 8 May 2026 (UTC)

- Strong oppose. Make Hantavirus a disambiguation page with links to Hantavirus infection, Orthohantavirus, and Hantaviridae. Probably could also include 1993 Four Corners hantavirus outbreak and MV Hondius hantavirus outbreak on a DAB page as the 1993 outbreak brought hantaviruses to broad attention, and the Hondius outbreak as a current event. The WP:AT shortcut WP:COMMONNAME is bullshit here. WP:PRECISION matters. We can better get readers to the topic they are searching for with a disambiguation page rather than arbitrarily titling an article about a taxonomy entity by a non-taxonomic name (COMMONNAME does not over-rule PRECISION). The topic associated with the title coronavirus is a disaster (most links to that title should go to COVID-19 or a more specific subtopic of COVID-19). Let's not repeat that mistake by making Hantavirus a less precise title for the topic of Orthohantavirus. I might have been willing to support this move if there wasn't an article for Hantavirus infection, but since that article exists, the proposed move is a disservice to readers. Plantdrew (talk) 04:17, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
- We have separate articles for the virus and the disease/infection in many cases, such as SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19; HIV and HIV/AIDS; Human papillomavirus infection and Human papillomavirus; and Herpes and Herpes simplex virus. In many cases there are additional article for particular manifestations, like Cold sore. And we see the same thing for bacterial infections. The situation likely does cause some confusion. I have spent a lot of time over the last year reviewing and often retargeting redirects to these families of articles. For the most part, I think that hatnotes, a well written lead and well organized article, and occasional review of redirects serves the project well. A Hantavirus dab page seems extraneous here. I reviewed incoming links to the hantavirus redirect the other day and the majority referred pretty clearly to the viruses (this article), a few were ambiguous, and I changed a few to a more specific link like hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The terminology is "ambiguous" only because the terms all refer to aspects of the same topic and for some virus–infection pairs we have way too much detail for a single article. The articles contain some appropriate duplication and in some ways serve as contextual directories that link back-and-forth to one another and to other subtopics like notable virus species, syndromes, and outbreaks. —Myceteae🍄🟫 (talk) 15:03, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
- Weak oppose. There are two main issues at play, in my opinion, one of which leans me to support, the other to oppose. I support for the same reason I gave in the move request Coronavirus disease 2019 → COVID-19 -- the examples given in WP:COMMONNAME includes "Polio (not: poliomyelitis)". The WP:COMMONNAME is in far more widespread use than the WP:OFFICIALNAME. What leans me more to oppose, however, is the thought we shouldn't get too hasty -- early RMs of COVID-19 put it at Coronavirus disease 2019, and if we had the same discussions at the same timeframe then as now, this WP:RM would have it move to Coronavirus, which did not last (and, from my non-American POV, seemed to be more prevalent in American media anyways). - A key difference is that hantaviruses have been known, named, and characterized for decades. SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 were new to science and truly new to nature and terminology was unstable for some time. Hantavirus may have reached a new level of global recognition, and we should be attentive to usage by the press and the general public in designing redirects and explaining terminology, but this is not a case where the scientific community has yet to agree on a name. —Myceteae🍄🟫 (talk) 19:01, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
- Strong Support per nom most reliable sources are calling it Hantavirus and we should go with what the reliable sources say per WP:COMMONAME. GothicGolem29 (Talk) 17:48, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
- Support Hantavirus. Consider Hantaviruses as alternative. This is the common name in the medical and scientific literature (which takes precedent per WP:MEDTITLE) and in general audience publications. There is some ambiguity with Hantaviridae but this can be addressed with a hatnote and appropriate clarification in the lead. There is no serious ambiguity with Hantavirus infection because that is a subtopic of this article. Renaming this Hantavirus would be WP:CONSISTENT with the titles of articles on subtopics: Hantavirus infection, Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, Hantavirus hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, Hantavirus vaccine, MV Hondius hantavirus outbreak, 1993 Four Corners hantavirus outbreak, 2012 Yosemite hantavirus outbreak, Hantavirus outbreak (a dab page), MV Hondius hantavirus outbreak in the United States, and Effects of climate change on hantavirus. Overwhelmingly, "hantavirus" refers to members of Orthohantavirus and "hantavirus" is by far the more commonly used term. Since January 1, 2020, Google Scholar has about 15,500 hits for hantavirus and just 2,610 for Orthohantavirus. "Hantavirus" is the terminology used by the US CDC, the WHO, and European CDC. This article already uses "hantavirus" throughout except in a few places where it is explicit about taxonomy or where it is necessary to distinguish from Hantaviridae. This article may be a candidate for a plural title, Hantaviruses, per WP:PLURAL. It deals with a set or group of related viruses. One small advantage of the current title is that the genus name Orthohantavirus makes this explicit. Hantaviruses has the advantage of making this explicit and using a more common name. However, it is common enough to use the singular "hantavirus" to refer to the genus and its members. I'm not convinced the plural is better but that could perhaps be considered in a subsequent RM after this closes. —Myceteae🍄🟫 (talk) 18:49, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
- Oppose. "Hantavirus" is more accurately a common name for viruses in Hantaviridae, not just Orthohantavirus. It feels wrong that "Coronavirus" is based at the subfamily level when coronaviruses are a family of viruses. It likewise would be odd to have "Hantavirus" be at the genus level when hantaviruses are a family of viruses. Velayinosu (talk) 02:08, 11 May 2026 (UTC)
- Currently Oppose, This all seems to be based on the current Hantavirus outbreak on that ship. Let's not get washed away in the current new thing and wait until the dust has settled down or whether it has a huge impact on the world. Hantavirus should probably go to Hantavirinae with a "This page is for the genus, for the most common species of hantavirus, see Orthohantavirus" hatnote.

- Support. There aren't any pages for other kinds of hantaviridae, and the Hantaviridae page mostly just talks about orthohantaviruses after briefly introducing the family. I think renaming to Hantavirus (and merging in Hantaviridae) would result in a similar situation to what we already have on the Hantaviridae page, and would ensure the title remains accurate and consistent with the content while still being WP:COMMONNAME. Merlin04talkcontribs 04:14, 12 May 2026 (UTC)

- Strong Oppose: The infection is a notable suptopic of the virus and the two shouldn't be conflated. Wikipedia has countless articles on viruses and others on diseases caused by said viruses. — EarthDude (Talk) 06:30, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
