Soundtrack Tracklist

I think it would be a great idea to add a tracklist to the soundtrack and more info about it. 2601:601:1401:A700:899:C8AB:DF6:D887 (talk) 20:35, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

Ico's cover is based on Ramsès Younan's "Tropic Of Cancer"

Specifically the rightmost third of the painting, the cover art is nearly a one-to-one recreation of it. I don't understand where its link to The Nostalgia of the Infinite came from, seems most likely that it was just a guess based on Ueda's quote about de Chirico. Going to add the appropriate edits soon if nobody has any objections. Lessloud (talk) 01:36, 5 July 2025 (UTC)

Ueda has specifically said that Nostalgia inspired his painting of the Ico cover, eg . Masem (t) 04:53, 5 July 2025 (UTC)
Both of those sources do not directly cite Ueda as saying that he was inspired by Nostalgia, the writers of the articles claim that the cover art for Ico was inspired by it (with no citations). The first change on this page that attributed the cover art to Nostalgia was made in 2005, which predates all of the sources that I've seen, and additionally does not have a source attributed to it. The closest instance I can see of Ueda attributing the cover art to de Chirico is from the page's quote of him being asked if Ico (the game) was inspired by de Chirico, not if the cover art was inspired by him.
Given that the first 2005 change occurred before the publication of the sources attributing the cover art to de Chirico, it seems plausible to me that the writers of those sources might have seen the 2005 change and propagated it in their own articles (to which we then cited their articles à la ouroboros).
Even if Ueda was quoted as saying that the box art was inspired by de Chirico, I think the fact that it so closely resembles Tropic Of Cancer should be mentioned on the page. Art can be both based on and inspired by two different things. Lessloud (talk) 14:17, 5 July 2025 (UTC)
We would need a reliable source for that, as otherwise claiming the cover resembles that painting is original research Masem (t) 16:09, 5 July 2025 (UTC)

I'm no art historian, but could it be they were both taking inspiration from Giorgio de Chirico? Infinite was painted in 1911, and Tropic Of Cancer painted in 1945, meaning it's entirely possible it's intentionally echoing Infinite. Also, I have noticed that many Japanese creators are often reluctant to cite their inspirations, possibly due to cultural reasons. So if we only have secondary sources making this declaration we can change wording a bit such as "has been identified as" rather than directly saying it's a homage to that painting if no one on Team Ico directly confirmed it. Harizotoh9 (talk) 07:18, 22 July 2025 (UTC)

I had to dig a bit but found exactly what was published, its from a 1UP article (which was publishing material from Official PlayStation Magazine): original (now dead) link and archived version

"OPM: The Japanese cover of Ico is a clever homage to the surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico. Was Ico inspired by de Chirico?
FU: I designed the Japanese cover, and I thought the surrealistic world of de Chirico matched the allegoric world of Ico." Masem (t) 15:56, 26 July 2025 (UTC)

Now I'm remembering something from my art history class where they discussed "Tropic Of Cancer". If I remember right, the painting is meant to pay homage to past artists (you can see a Picasso style painting in the middle among others), and the rightmost side of the painting pays homage to Giorgio de Chirico. My memory on this is fuzzy since it was so long ago, and it was only briefly discussed, and I can't find anything online discussing this. Harizotoh9 (talk) 21:02, 15 September 2025 (UTC)

Cover was designed by Ueda but painted by Nanako Ohmura and Chika Fukui

Sorry for not bringing this up earlier, I completely forgot this might be of value to editors of this page.

One of the game's character and field designers explained in a Bluesky post earlier this year that while Ueda designed the cover, the actual painting was done by field designer Nanako Ohmura (later went on to be known as Sasai Ikko as an illustrator) with help from character designer Chika Fukui, using a program called "Corel painter."

Ueda may have made some final edits to the piece.

I'm not sure if Bluesky posts can be cited so I won't edit the page myself. https://bsky.app/profile/zackmannx.bsky.social/post/3lgthm3eojk2r

Do you have a link to that post? Masem (t) 21:28, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
Oops see it there now Masem (t) 21:28, 13 October 2025 (UTC)

This is very likely to be true, and it's very common to simplify development history by attributing to the lead designer whereas the reality is more nuanced. There would need to be a source to discuss this, and my first guess would be that this may be mentioned in a Japanese language source (perhaps the official guide book?). So as of now, a bluesky post would not be sufficient as a citation. Harizotoh9 (talk) 07:01, 5 November 2025 (UTC)

Requested move 27 February 2026

IcoIco (video game)Ico (video game) – Per WP:NOPRIMARY, same as ICO in disambiguation page. Absolutiva 13:18, 27 February 2026 (UTC)

The ICO disambiguation page should be moved to Ico if this move is done. Masem (t) 14:31, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
  • Support per nom.--Ortizesp (talk) 15:23, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
  • Support, this is not the primary topic. 162 etc. (talk) 17:15, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
  • Oppose, unless I'm missing something obvious. Almost everything at the disambiguation page is ICO, except for three things: a Brazilian town called Icó, an Argentine film named Ico, el caballito valiente, and Ico Hitrec. Ico and ICO are different enough to be differentiated by WP:DIFFCAPS, and everything else is titled something different than just "Ico". There is little ambiguity here, so I don't see any reason why the page should move. Ladtrack (talk) 00:41, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
I moved to Icó, Ceará, from the same page name with diacritics. Absolutiva 05:48, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
That wasn't really necessary. We have a guideline WP:SMALLDETAILS that says that slight differences in spelling, punctuation, or grammar can be enough to consider a topic sufficiently distinct as to not require additional disambiguation. In this case, the town is referred to as Icó, with the diacritic over the o. Nothing here could be referred to with the diacritic, so the town should be the primary topic for that variant of the word. Similarly, there is nothing here called just "Ico" except the video game, so the video game should be primary over that variant of the word. Ladtrack (talk) 06:00, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
I changed a redirect, to make it less ambiguity. Absolutiva 07:23, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
That's been reverted, the article is now at its stable title Icó. 162 etc. (talk) 21:30, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Oppose per Ladtrack. Æ's old account wasn't working (talk) 13:17, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Support - There are many other things that "Ico" can refer to. Guz13 (talk) 01:16, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
  • Support per nominator. Even if the town is sometimes written with an accent mark, "Ico" without an accent mark could still easily refer to the town. The safest bet is to have the basename go to the disambiguation page. Paintspot Infez (talk) 00:16, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
Hmm. Between the two topics, the video game gets 99.5% of pageviews. Granted, long-term significance suggests erring on the side of the city, but that article is barely more than a stub, doesn't really demonstrate notability at all, and 99.5% is a really high pageview ratio. Even if the town were just Ico without diacritic, wouldn't the video game still be primary topic? Ladtrack (talk) 02:01, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
