Dates
The dating in this is confusing and inconsistent. The periods listed in the lede do not match the dates given in the summary of periods which do not match the dates given in the headers for the periods.
Lede:
traditionally dated between c. 14,000–300 BCE, recently refined to about 1000 BCE
Summary:
The very long, approximately 14,000 years, Jōmon period is conventionally divided into a number of phases: Incipient (16,500-10,000 years ago), Initial (10,000–7,000), Early (7,000–5,450), Middle (5,450–4,420), Late (4,420–3,220) and Final (3,220–2,350), with the phases getting progressively shorter.
Headers:
Incipient and Initial Jōmon (14,000–4000 BCE)
Early Jōmon (4000–2500 BCE)
Middle Jōmon (2500–1500 BCE)
Late and Final Jōmon (1500–900/300 BCE)
I can see some of the dates are in BCE and some are in "years ago" which explains some of the inconsistency (eg 1500 BCE vs 4420 years ago) but even then there is a lot of inconsistency (14000 BCE vs 16500 years ago vs 1000 BCE in the lede, or 7000 years ago vs 4000 BCE). I know there has been some serious contention here from the talk, but can someone who knows something about the topic at least make the dates consistent (also using a consistent format, either BCE or "years ago" to reduce confusion)? For someone seeking information without a foundation in the topic, the confusion of dates and date formats makes this article somewhat useless. 2601:140:C000:A593:2022:1D38:B1F1:C0B3 (talk) (June 2019)
Plans in the works for updating all dates as well as adding more info Miketsushimi (talk) 02:35, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- I think it is usual to have "years ago" for older dates, and BC/BCE for more recent ones, so I'm not sure combining eg "16,500-10,000 years ago" with "1,000 and 800 BCE" is actually wrong, or that much more confusing. It might be better, if both styles are to be kept, to agree a common switch-over point for the article - say 10,000 years ago = 8,000 BCE. Obviously 16,000 years ago = 14,000 BCE; but the "Final" dates are well adrift. Johnbod (talk) 03:13, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- This is English - can we use "13,750–5,000", not "13 750–5 000", per WP:MOS. Johnbod (talk) 04:20, 15 December 2020 (UTC)

Oh hey, I have relevant experience with this. I'll try to get to this over the coming days. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 18:09, 7 October 2025 (UTC)
- Oh, cool and thanks for reviewing! No pressure, but if you later have time you may be interested in another Jōmon-related GA nom of mine: Sannai-Maruyama Site. If not, that's preferectly fine too. No worries. MisawaSakura (talk) 18:15, 7 October 2025 (UTC)
- Generalissima Gentlest ping. Do you know when you can start reviewing this? TKs. MisawaSakura (talk) 12:04, 14 October 2025 (UTC)
- @MisawaSakura: Dearest apologies, this week has been very unexpectedly busy and I have not had as much free time as I thought I would. I promise that I will be able to complete this within the next week or so, but if you would prefer I put it back in the queue I can totally do that instead. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 12:41, 14 October 2025 (UTC)
- Generalissima I'd like to keep this with you and accept your promise to get to it within a week or so. I've seen you around wiki, such as at FAC, and you impress me as a good reviewer and person of integrity. MisawaSakura (talk) 12:44, 14 October 2025 (UTC)

Actual review
Thank you very much for your patience (I was at WikiCon North America, and a lot of stuff happened which made it hard to get back to the review). Here are some initial thoughts
- The Historical present is sometimes used in archaeological papers, but would be confusing here for many readers; I think it'd be more accessible in present tense.
- The pottery timeline isn't really contextualized well; it's just a list of names, and there's no context given for what distinguishes these pottery types temporally or physically. It seems like the kinda thing that would be more suited for the Jōmon pottery article, preferably in table form to allow contextualization. I would instead have a few paragraphs of prose explaining the evolution of pottery over time.
- The chronology section doesn't really tell us what defines the Jomon from the Yayoi or the Paleolithic. I also note that the articles doesn't use the terms Mesolithic or Neolithic, which seem to see common use when discussing the era, and help connect it to other archaeological cultures.
- Article layout is confusing to me - it is mostly divided temporarily, except for pottery. It could be reworked to be strictly chronological, or divided instead by subject (albeit with more information given in the Chronology section on what defines each period)
- The ethnogenesis portion seems to be given unusual amount of focus (about a third of the article). Rigorous discussion of hapologroups and alleles is a bit jargony and seems out of scope for this article; I feel the general academic perspective can be summarized, and more detailed info saved for Jōmon people. (Also, talking about Yayoi/Jomon admixture here is a little confusing if it's supposed to be about their origins)
- Additionally, you have a cite bomb at the end of the first paragraph in this section.
- The 'Cultural revival' seems undue weight for a fairly minor aspect of the period's legacy. I think you could fold that in (in prose) to a 'legacy' section which could include the Foundation myths section as well.
- Transoceanic similarities also has a refbomb (is there a single source which surveys academic coverage of that topic broadly which you could use instead?) It also seems like it'd work better under ethnogenesis or such, rather than as its own section.
- Finally, it seems like there's some breadth issues. Setting aside my own article on the Gusuku period, the current GAs on archaeological periods appear to be Late Shang and Middle Stone Age. The latter is admittedly a bit more paleolithic in scope, but I'd definitely look to these to determine what an ideal breadth for this topic looks like. Some aspects I would consider missing here:
- Archaeological study of the period over time and differing perspectives. This would be a good way to include the traditional narrative into a broader section; you could also see if there's any information about how Jōmon-era artifacts were traditionally viewed.
- Developments in agriculture after its introduction
- interactions between the Yayoi and Jōmonduring their period of coexistence beyond genetic admixture
- The origin of the name "Jōmon" (this is mentioned under 'pottery' but it really should be given earlier
- Societal structure, and how this changed over time (this could be its own section, although it would assuredly have to explain different archaeological perspectives as such matters are never unambiguous for a prehistoric culture)
- Any evidence of social stratification?
- Any evidence of warfare or violence?
- Any evidence of religious ritual, esp. in regards to burial (always a favorite for archaeologists)
- Any evidence of trade or economic activities beyond subsistence?
- What prominent archaeological sites are there?
- Elaboration on art besides pottery is very scarce. The Jōmon famously made various ceramic figurines, and I would expect there to be other forms of crafts that exist from the culture.
- What did house construction look like? You briefly mention pit-houses, but were these the only form used? How exactly did they vary over time?
- Was the population decline during the Late Jōmon the only major demographic shift? If not, might be good to have a demography subsection somewhere
All this being said, it's a really nice job so far, but I don't think it's particularly close to passing GA criteria at the moment. For a topic this expansive, I would recommend bringing it to Peer review after rewriting before re-GANing to see if you can try to get some varied perspectives on it. I would be happy to review it again in the future if you'd have me. Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 03:57, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
