I wanted to open a discussion on whether it makes sense to use 2025 data instead of 2026. My concern is that 2026 hasn’t happened yet, and any figures for this year are projections rather than actual data. Based on the information in the table section of the page romania was above the 20k threshold from 2022 onwards - however the map is putting us in a lower bracket (below 20k).

I am raising a concern about a series of unsourced edits made by user User:The Account 2 on 14 April 2026 that appear to have significantly altered India's IMF GDP per capita figure without any citation or explanation, and which subsequently became the basis for a viral misinformation post on social media.

On 14 April 2026, user User:The Account 2 made five edits to this article within approximately three hours (15:13, 15:24, 17:29, 17:39, and 18:20 UTC). The critical edit is the one at 17:29 UTC (oldid=1348864905), which is a -527 byte change with no edit summary and no citation.

This single edit changed India's IMF 2026 nominal GDP per capita figure from approximately $3,051 to $2,813 — a drop of $238 — while simultaneously reordering dozens of other countries in the table. No source was added to justify these changes.

The session's final edit at 18:20 UTC carried the edit summary: "Switzerland no longer poorest nation on earth (lol)", which strongly suggests the editing session was not carried out with appropriate diligence or sourcing standards.

Two days after this edit, on 16 April 2026, a post appeared on Reddit (r/india) with the title "Zimbabwe and Bangladesh surpass India in GDP per capita as India slips to 149th position this year" — directly citing this Wikipedia article as its source. The post received nearly 1,000 upvotes and a 94% upvote rate, spreading the unsourced data widely.

This is not an isolated incident. The edit history shows:

• On 11 February 2026, user EvergreenFir reverted edits by Gorby2025 with the reason "Unexplained data changes".
• On 16 February 2026, user M.Bitton edited India's data and explicitly noted in the edit summary: "per talk page (I didn't check the source, but the current number is obviously wrong)".
• Multiple editors have changed India and other countries' figures repeatedly without adding citations to the IMF WEO source.

I am requesting that:

1. The April 14, 17:29 UTC edit by User:The Account 2 be reviewed and reverted if unsourced.
2. India's IMF 2026 figure be verified directly against the cited IMF Data Explorer source (https://data.imf.org/en/Data-Explorer?datasetUrn=IMF.RES:WEO(9.0.0)) before any value is restored.
3. Consideration be given to requesting semi-protection review or adding a citation-required tag to the IMF column, given the chronic instability of data in this table.

This page is clearly a target for politically motivated data manipulation given it ranks countries by a metric that attracts strong nationalistic sentiment. Hello, recently my friend and I have been calculating GDP per capita using IMF sources, and we found that the reported figures for many countries, such as Sweden and Israel, appear to be inaccurate. The data needs to be updated to ensure consistency. For example, Sweden’s GDP per capita is actually over $78K according to IMF and Worldometer sources, and Israel’s is around $71K as well. Worldometers is not considered a reliable source, and is marked red on WP:RSP. The IMF source you gave shows the nominal GDP, but it needs to be divided by the population to get a per capita figure. Comparing statistics from different organizations (i.e. if the IMF does not report population) can give misleading results, but I'll try to look if there's anything that already is divided through. thunkii (talk) 20:11, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
