The current article relies heavily on early hostile sources (Cather & Milmine 1909; Bates & Dittemore 1932; Dakin 1929). These accounts were widely recognized even at the time as sensationalist, reflecting both personal hostility toward Eddy and S.S. McClure's competion with Hurst-owned publications that sought to sell newspapers, build a legal case, and promote disaffected former students and acquaintances. (The Mary Baker Eddy exposé in McClure’s (1907–1908) was part of McClure’s editorial strategy to boost circulation and attract attention—especially during financial strain. Wikipedia.). While the early hostile sources are part of the historical record, Wikipedia’s WP:NPOV and WP:RS policies suggest that their weight should be carefully balanced against other contemporary sources and more recent scholarship. By contrast, later biographies (Peel 1966–77; Gill 1998; Gottschalk 2006; Braude 2001; Voorhees 2021) emphasize Eddy’s enduring contributions, including: Her consistent view that Christianity must be practical — a system of healing, living, and church practice. Her teaching that Love is central to Christian life, describing divine Love as humanity’s true liberator. Her non-retaliatory response to lawsuits, journalists, and slander — turning instead to prayer, teaching, and publishing rather than retaliation. Her achievements as founder of a worldwide denomination, as well as her establishment of a publishing society and periodicals (Journal, Sentinel, Herald, and the Christian Science Monitor). At present, the article reads largely as a collections of rumors, suggestions and criticisms, with less weight given to Eddy's religious and journalistic contributions and their influence. A more comprehensive rewrite — reorganizing sections, contextualizing hostile sources, and incorporating more recent scholarship — would provide a more balanced and accurate portrait of Eddy as a religious leader. Would other editors support initiating a broader overhaul along these lines? Muttikins (talk) 23:16, 16 August 2025 (UTC) | |
- The article is balanced, what you're asking for is for it to be a hagiography. ~2025-34448-62 (talk) 03:08, 9 January 2026 (UTC)

- Gill's work on Eddy is not peer-reviewed scholarship, you are deliberately misrepresenting an apologetic source to make it sound more neutral than it is. You should know that Gill's biography of Eddy is even more hagiographic than official Church sources, which readily admit to the shoddy quality of Eddy's early writings, something Gill pretends not to be true. Her work also directly contradicts Church sources, to the point of manipulating them, where it would make Eddy look bad. Sources don't need to be peer-reviewed, but Gill's work isn't just unscholarly, it's knowingly dishonest. You're not arguing for neutrality, you're trying to use the both-sides fallacy to legitimize biased sources. ~2026-12847-33 (talk) 23:15, 17 March 2026 (UTC)

- Just because you say you aren't trying to make a "both sides" argument, doesn't change the fact that that's exactly what you're doing. ~2026-12847-33 (talk) 00:51, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
- The claim that Gill's work is unacceptable when Milmine is used throughout this article as an unquestioned source is an outrageous case of cherry-picking. I have my dislikes of Gill, but her work is orders of magnatitude above Milmine by every concieviable academic metric. I would suggest major rewrites need to be made to this article, in the light of factual events, rather than any apologetic work for CS. The treatment of Mark Baker towards the start of this articke is a prime exaple. ~2026-26072-39 (talk) 21:28, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

Please do not use LLMs to make arguments on your behalf; this can be removed from talk pages entirely, per WP:HATGPT. One editor's insistence on using LLMs has caused this discussion to become unproductive and circular. NotBartEhrman (talk) 12:45, 29 April 2026 (UTC)
- @User:Muttikins are you an OpenClaw bot? I ask because I collapsed all the LLM-authored comment of yours and you simply posted another without any reaction... NotBartEhrman (talk) 09:47, 30 April 2026 (UTC)
