NankiNanki (train service) – Apparently, "Nanki" is a a name for the southwestern coastal region of Wakayama Prefecture (historically the southern Kii Province, the source of Nanki Otokoyama ware), and various things around Shirahama, Wakayama, have "Nanki" in their name because of this (such as the Nanki-Katsuura Onsen and the Nanki–Shirahama Airport). The Kii Peninsula article says "The area south of the 'Central Tectonic Line' is called Nanki (南紀)" (and I wish I found that sentence earlier). See this article about the train service, which says "Nanki (南紀) is the name of the area in Kii peninsula (紀伊半島)". A Nanki faction is discussed in the Shogun article, and the University of Tokyo Library has a Nanki Collection, and there was a newspaper called the Nanki Shimpō in the area. It generally appears to refer to the south or a southern kingdom and has also been used as a name for people, some in Japan (e.g., a swordmaker Nanki Shigekuni (ja) who made a Wakizashi and manga writer Nanki Satō of Sex Nanka Kyōminai, Usotsuki Paradox and Boku wa Ikemen) and some in India (e.g. the politician Nanki Ram Kanwar and a character in Guilty (2020 film)). There's a "Nanki-Poo" character in The Mikado and a related Nanki character in Dick Deadeye, or Duty Done. Does "Nanki" really primarily refer to a train service? — BarrelProof (talk) 01:52, 9 April 2026 (UTC)

  • This seems unlikely to be the primary topic. There's also Bibi NankiBibi Nanki, a redirect to Bebe Nanaki. Just looking at pageviews trends for a few of these that seem most likely to be referred to as "Nanki" alone, the train service gets the fewest views. If we add in partial title matches, Nanki begins to look even less likely the primary topic, specially over the region of the Kii Peninsula. Google Books and JSTOR mostly return reference to Nanki-Poo, with JSTOR also having many for the references to the Nanki Music Library. —Myceteae🍄‍🟫 (talk) 18:33, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
