Talk:UEFA European Championship

@Snowflake91: UEFA Euro 2028 Must be the United Kingdom and Ireland only to abbreviate. --Patcha007 (talk) 12:37, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

See above, the UEFA.com link posted by PeeJay literally says that England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, Wales are the hosts of Euro 2028. Snowflake91 (talk) 12:39, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

@Snowflake91: So why not combine the UK and Ireland? 🤔 --Patcha007 (talk) 13:03, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

Because UEFA don't do that. The UK is not a single nation when it comes to football. – PeeJay 16:17, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

@Snowflake91: UEFA themselves refer to the UK and Ireland as winners of the bid and the hosts.^[1][2] The national associations of the constituent countries are referenced as well, as they are responsible for the national teams and the bidding process, but when referring specifically to the host nations (as well as in the logo for the tournament) they state UK and Ireland. AnimeBatman (talk) 14:42, 11 July 2024 (UTC)

Not correct, see UEFA source where it clearly says "2028: England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, Wales". What is written on the logo is completely irrelevant, this "UK & Ireland" is just branding and nothing else, you think they're gonna write 5 countries on that tiny space on the logo or what? Snowflake91 (talk) 14:50, 11 July 2024 (UTC)

Your source refers to the host associations rather than the geographical hosts. If we were to use that example for each tournament, Euro 2020 would have 10 flags associated with it rather than the Flag of Europe. It's not just UEFA, journalistic sources refer to the UK and Ireland as the host nations.^[3] For clarity's sake I think the article is better served with 2 flags instead of 5, particularly as it's conceivable that some of the host associations may not even participate in the tournament due to the limited number of automatic qualification spaces AnimeBatman (talk) 15:00, 11 July 2024 (UTC)

Disagree. UEFA have confirmed the hosts nations as the individual countries and NOT the United Kingdom. Best to leave it as is. Euro 2020 is incomparable as it was a pan-European event to celebrate the history of the tournament. The individual host countries have been provided by UEFA as England, Scotland, Wales and NI and until a source appears from UEFA stating otherwise (as in this is the host countries) and NOT just referring to the UK & Ireland bid and marketing material, then leave it as is. Goodreg3 (talk) 00:57, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Additionally, if you go to the bottom of the article of the source Snowflake has provided, you will see quite clearly and simply that the final UEFA Euro tournament hosts for 2028 is credited as England, Scotland, Wales, NI and ROI - in the geographical term you claim is omitted from the source provided. Therefore, UEFA reference individual home nations as hosts, therefore, so should we. Goodreg3 (talk) 01:00, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Just put 'British Isles', then everyone's happy. 51.6.69.13 (talk) 04:59, 14 April 2025 (UTC)

The Irish wouldn't be. They fucking hate that term. – PeeJay 16:41, 14 April 2025 (UTC)

why Slovakia is awarded 1976 wins?? Czech Republic is the only heir of CzechoSlovakia 37.101.116.80 (talk) 12:59, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Not according to the UEFA link they don't 92.9.101.1 (talk) 21:20, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

Both teams are the successors and it's easier to split the records with 2 teams than it is with 15 and 6/7 like it is for the USSR/Russia & Yugoslavia/Serbia teams. Also most of the starting lineup in the final were Slovakian. 92.9.101.1 (talk) 21:26, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

Then it would be logical to make trophies separately for the USSR and not include Russia, which was not the entire USSR, but only one of the 15 republics. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.249.128.102 (talk) 09:02, 10 June 2025 (UTC)

Per consensus at talk page (archive 3) and UEFA website, they clearly recognise Russia as the solely successor of USSR (see 1, 2, 3 etc.) Snowflake91 (talk) 09:36, 10 June 2025 (UTC)

Apparently, UEFA does not regard "successor teams" of the defunct states as winners anymore. For example:

• Czechoslovakia profile: 1x title (1976), first app 1960, last app 1980.
• Slovakia profile: not treated as successor of Czechoslovakia. No trophy icon like Czechoslovakia, first app in 2016.
• Czechia profile: same as above, not treated as successor of Czechoslovakia. First app in 1996 (runners-up).
• Russia profile: not treated as successor of USSR. First app in 1996.
• USSR U21 profile: for some reason, there is no profile for USSR at the senior European championship website (or I can't find it), but there is one for U21. And they are treated as a separate entry with 2 titles between 1978 and 1992, so Russia didn't inherit anything.

And since we have separate articles for those countries (Czechoslovakia national football team, Soviet Union national football team, Yugoslavia national football team...), we should include it like that, with the names at the time of reaching the finals. This would be also supported by highly reliable secondary sources like RSSSF, which has Czechoslovakia and Czechia as separate entries, and also Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, not Russia and Serbia. Same as WorldFootball source, which has 1x winners for Czechoslovakia and 1x for Soviet Union, simple as that, no contradiction mess with "successor teams". Sorry for creating a new section below instead of responding to yours, as it didn't exist at the time of writing.

Support: I support the arguments presented, and this would avoid any changes from UEFA, like possibly, awarding officially all 15 post-Soviet states the records of the Soviet-Union in the future. Miria~01 (talk) 07:58, 15 June 2025 (UTC)

@Snowflake91 and 2001:B07:6474:3690:48B5:E9F7:F5CC:AE11: FYI: There were already discussions on this topic in another article in April 2024 → Talk:UEFA European Championship records and statistics and in WT:Footy#:Czechoslovakia's records now in January 2024.

All Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both Czechia and Slovakia (see breakdown below).
There is no doubt that UEFA attributes Czechoslovakia's records equally to both Czechia and Slovakia. This is also explicitly stated by UEFA with regard to the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia's records, with only one country being credited with the records of the successor states, Russia and Serbia, respectively. Although this results in a ranking (when considering today's successor states) in which there are 18 winners in 17 tournaments, this is how it is viewed by UEFA as well as by secondary sources .

Not to forget that UEFA is actually implementing something that corresponds to historical and political facts: The Czech and Slovak Federal Republic dissolved on December 31, 1992, and was succeeded by two independent states: the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Both nations are considered successor states to Czechoslovakia by the UN. In contrast, with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia was designated as the sole successor state by agreement with the Council of Europe in 1994. .

One more small note regarding the 2021 consensus: This was based on a false premise, as it was repeatedly stated that Czechia was considered the sole successor to UEFA and FIFA. Therefore, in my opinion, this consensus is invalid and should be reconsidered in light of new facts, as it would likely result in a different outcome, favoring Option A.
