Orania - Afrikaner or white separatist
The inclusion of "white separatist" in the first sentence of the lead of Orania was determined in 2022 RFC. You can read the RFC at Talk:Orania/Archive 3#RfC: What should the first sentence be?. Part of the problem is that a lot of the coverage in so-called "reliable" sources is written by people who are writing for an audience of Americans and Europeans. So they focus on skin colour because their audiences relate to that issue. Wikipedia policy is that articles should be based on what reliable sources say (see Wikipedia:Core content policies), so if most reliable sources express Orania in terms of being "white separatist", then the article is likely to say just that.
If you want to change the first sentence of the article, you should start a new RFC. The page Wikipedia:Requests for comment tells you have to do this. It would be entirely appropriate to start a new RFC because:
- It has been about three years since the last RFC.
- There has been discussion on the talk page about how inappropriate the first sentence is given that the people of Orania identify as "Afrikaners" and "Boers", not as white.
My advice is to look at what reliable sources have said during the last three years (i.e. after the last RFC), and perhaps also to see whether higher quality sources give more accurate coverage than left-wing newspapers such as The Guardian.-- Toddy1 (talk) 10:20, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
