Query
Hello, IronGargoyle,
If you look at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion by user, you'll see dozens of files that have been tagged for speedy deletion by an editor who uploaded them on the Commons, reportedly, but you are noted as the creator. I'm unsure about deleting these so I'm hoping you can handle them. Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 22:41, 16 February 2025 (UTC)
- Declined all. They are freely-licensed images which were deleted from Commons, but are still free to use here under {{FoP-USonly}}. Creative Commons licenses cannot be revoked of course. Thanks for the heads up. IronGargoyle (talk) 23:07, 16 February 2025 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Zolotas's house on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, Athens, Greece.jpg

A tag has been placed on File:Zolotas's house on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, Athens, Greece.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Recent anon
Hi, a recent brand-new anon has been on the verge of edit-warring with me and has been since engaged in zero discussion with me when asked and even begun now peskily editing other pages I commonly edit. Should I go through the whole formal process of the Administrators' Noticeboard at this point? Here's the user in question's contributions. Thanks for any help! Wolfdog (talk) 19:11, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Wolfdog: The edits seem pretty harmless and only reoccur a little on a single page. I don't know that you can assume that they are following you around. It looks like they may just have interest in these particular language variants. This does not seem like an issue for the Administrators' Noticeboard yet. See if it persists or the reverts get faster. IronGargoyle (talk) 19:20, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
- Again though, they're also editing multiple pages that I most recently edited (one of which already a third editor has reverted back to my last version). I'm trying to avoid a 3RR, so I'll wait a bit longer to see if they respond before reverting on the Southern page. Thanks for your thoughts. Wolfdog (talk) 19:33, 4 April 2025 (UTC)

Request to transfer image from Commons to enWiki
Hi,
@Puldin: was trying to create a cropped version of File:Notre dame de la paix yamoussoukro by felix krohn.jpg for use in a list article where a more upright image would be suitable. Unfortunately, the editor uploaded it to Commons instead of locally. Ivory Coast does not have FOP. Could you please move it from Commons to enWiki, and give it a more appropriate name at the same time? The file on Commons is c:File:20250520135038!Notre dame de la paix yamoussoukro by felix krohn~2.jpg. Thanks. -- Whpq (talk) 15:47, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

File:Jurong Point 2025.jpeg
Hi IronGargoyle. Would you mind taking a peek at File:Jurong Point 2025.jpeg? At first glance, it looks like it should be OK for Commons per c:COM:FOP Singapore and c:Template:FoP-Singapore, but would be OK as {{FOP-USonly}} even if it's not. I just would like a second opinion. File:HDB flats in Jurong West Central 2025.JPG, File:Masjid Assyakirin.JPG, File:Aerial View of Jurong Central Park.JPG File:Jurong West Park 2025.JPG, File:Jurong West Town Centre 2025.JPG, File:Nan Hua High School and Residential Buildings.JPG and File:Nanyang CC.jpg also probably are OK for Commons. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:55, 8 October 2025 (UTC)

File:Daya Front view.jpeg
Hi IronGargoyle. Could you take a look at File:Daya Front view.jpeg? There's FoP in India for buidlings per c:COM:FOP India, but this might need VRT verification because of this (the online version is low res so perhaps the uploader is connected to the hospital). For reference, the same file also uploaded to Commons as c:File:Daya Front view.jpg; so, a local file wouldn't really be needed anyway if the Commons' one is OK as licensed, right? -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:56, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah, this should be speedy deleted locally as a duplicate (after replacing the link in the draft with the Commons version of the file). A deletion request should probably be opened for c:File:Daya Front view.jpg and possibly some of the user's other uploads there. I'm quite busy at the moment, but I'll try to get to this in the next few days. IronGargoyle (talk) 13:47, 13 October 2025 (UTC)
Unwarranted deletion of images on Ciprian Porumbescu article
I think you need to familiarise yourself with the concept of digital restoration. Just because artificial intelligence is being used/mentioned, it doesn't imply the image is AI generated. DxO Photolabs patented the DeepPrime denoising algorithm over a decade before AI became a buzzword. Yet it's a powerful AI tool, and DxO Labs aren't the only ones out there adding AI tools to their workflow. You won't hear anybody saying that the output is nonsense or an AI generated image. People who don't understand the difference between AI-powered restoration/enhancement (DxO DeepPrime, Adobe AI Denoise, Topaz Sharpen AI) and AI image generation (DALL-E, Midjourney, etc) should refrain from calling it nonsense. What's next, calling any image that doesn't come straight out of a developing lab a fake? 2001:BB6:768E:9200:7C43:2052:48C5:9ABA (talk) 10:07, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
- Digital restoration is fine if you are concerned about images being pretty, but we are much more concerned with images being accurate. And indeed, the image you are talking about (File:Berta.jpg) is not a high quality restoration. As the image EXIF states, it was plugged into Google Gemini and out came a dreamy-looking image which has no material advantages over an authentic image of the subject. Digital restoration has some niche applications on Wikipedia, but this isn't it. IronGargoyle (talk) 14:51, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
- "@IronGargoyleout came a dreamy-looking image which has no material advantages over an authentic image of the subject" - Except for the “dreamy” aspect, the same can be said of ANY image that has undergone restoration, AI assisted or otherwise. You cannot add something that wasn’t there to begin with. Once you do, it crosses the line from image restoration to AI generation, which is rather ironic given that this was your original reason for deletion.
- I would argue that the image in question is cleaner, slightly sharper, and has better contrast. You might argue that these are subjective assessments - true to a point - but your decision to remove the image was equally subjective and not based on any scientific or objective criteria.
- To illustrate this point, all 4 images were AI restored, and one could even argue that the close-up portrait of Porumbescu himself has a “dreamy” quality. 2001:BB6:768E:9200:7036:1A6D:5F57:E6E4 (talk) 21:54, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
Guide to temporary accounts
Hello, IronGargoyle. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.
Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.
How do temporary accounts work?
- When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern:
~2025-12345-67(a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5). - All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
- A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
- As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
- There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
- There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.
Temporary account IP viewer user right
- Administrators may grant the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right to non-administrators who meet the criteria for granting. Importantly, an editor must make an explicit request for the permission (e.g. at WP:PERM/TAIV)—administrators are not permitted to assign the right without a request.
- Administrators will automatically be able to see temporary account IP information once they have accepted the Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy via Special:Preferences or via the onboarding dialog which comes up after temporary accounts are deployed.
Impact for administrators
- It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
- It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
- Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).
Rules about IP information disclosure
- Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
- Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g.
~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR
, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67) - See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.
Useful tools for patrollers
- It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options →
Enable the user info card
- This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
- Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
- Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
- The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

For uploading File:Songdo International Business District 25.JPG here. I forgot this is possible. You can check my talk page on commons for some other good photos of landmarks deleted, and there's an entire category on Commons (not complete, sadly) with FOP-deleted SK images :( We should move most of them here... Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 01:08, 4 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Piotrus: Thanks for the heads up about your talk page. Let me know if there are specific files you want undeleted and where they should be used on enwiki to improve existing articles. I have generally been going through and undeleting/transfering mostly files which have been used previously (which is an enormous task on its own). If I started more wholesale transfers of all images of buildings which are not allowed on commons because of freedom of panorama rules, I suspect some might complain about WP:NOTGALLERY/WP:NOTWEBHOST. IronGargoyle (talk) 12:44, 5 November 2025 (UTC)
- Your current approach is probably more sound - making sure articles have an illustration is #1 priority. And yes, I can imagine some would make trouble (meta:copyright paranoia is scary...). I cannot think right now, sadly, of whether any image of mine was used to illustrate something, since there is no notification to uploder regarding such uses, and I uploaded too many images to check what's going on with them. I can say only that there are some folks enforcing South Korean no-FOP rules now and then, and they surely managed to get some articles de-imaged. One thing that coems to mind - I think we had close ups of Statue of King Sejong (Gwanghwamun) and Statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, including mine, and I am pretty sure they got nuked, now we have just zoomed out images that probably survived due some de minimis, sigh. Hi. I think the billboard is beyond the limits of what is acceptable for c:COM:De minimis. — Ирука13 02:29, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
- See section two of the examples: “Copyrighted work X is identifiable but is an unwanted intrusion to the subject which unfortunately cannot easily be removed.” The example of the painting is a very comparable example in terms of size relative to the entire image frame. In the present image, it is very clear that capturing the poster was not the primary intent of the photographer. IronGargoyle (talk) 03:42, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
- I disagree. Although the copyrighted image is not in the main, it takes up much more space than in point 2. It's intact; and can easily be blurred or squared without losing its encyclopedic value. These are the first, second, third, and sixth images from point 6. — Ирука13 04:17, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
- Point 6 requires the object to be the point of intent of the photograph, and in the examples at point 6 it is clear that the photographers were intending to capture particular copyrighted works. That is a pretty important element you left out. The photograph you take issue with here is intending to capture the mall building. The poster is completely incidental. IronGargoyle (talk) 04:27, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
- "Copyrighted work X, despite not being an intended subject, is prominent enough that it can reasonably infringe copyright in a different context." — Ирука13 04:33, 7 December 2025 (UTC)
- It only takes up about 1/10th of the total area of the image. That doesn't seem prominent enough to be a violation, particularly when to you compare it to other allowable examples on the page and the centrality of intention to capture as the theme most emphasized. IronGargoyle (talk) 18:05, 7 December 2025 (UTC)

My 15 images
Hello, Honestly, I cannot understand what is happening with my personal photos that I uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. I was surprised to find them listed for deletion yesterday, and today I noticed that you have placed them on English Wikipedia only.
I still do not understand the reason for this, as these are photos that I personally took using my own mobile phone. They were not taken from anyone else’s work and are, of course, owned by me.
Could you please explain the situation to me and advise on the best solution to resolve this issue and avoid it from happening again in the future? Thank you very much. Abdelrhman 1990 (talk) 08:20, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Abdelrhman 1990: Sorry, I thought I replied to you earlier but I guess I forgot. There was either a change in law or change in interpretation of law in Egypt with regard to Wikimedia Commons. The current opinion among many there is that you cannot freely reproduce pictures of recent architectural works. This is a lack of freedom on panorama (a summary of Egyptian freedom of panorama is here). IronGargoyle (talk) 13:47, 31 December 2025 (UTC)

Mother Ukraine
Regarding File:«Батьківщина-Мати на фоні похмурого неба».jpg and File:Rodina mat Kiev (arms).jpg, these seem to be outside the limits of WP:FOP, with the {{FoP-USonly}} on them specificity saying that [t]he U.S. freedom of panorama does not extend to public artworks
. Am I missing something here? If not I'm intending to convert both to WP:NFC. Cakelot1 ☞️ talk 12:28, 31 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Cakelot1: It counts as a building under US law. The figure itself is able to be occupied by humans. IronGargoyle (talk) 13:37, 31 December 2025 (UTC)
- From what I can see (e.g.), all that's inside the actual statue (not the pedestal on which it sits, which contains a museum) is a staircase and elevator, that you need to where a safety harness to clime (the viewing platform at the top is on the outside of sculpture). Is that all it takes for something to be a building? Don't most large sculptures have some sort of access for at least workers to get to the top (for example the staircase inside The Motherland Calls)? Does that mean that all such sculptures are buildings, and can be posted under {{FoP-USonly}}? Is there somewhere this has been previously discussed? Cakelot1 ☞️ talk 14:21, 31 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Cakelot1: The video you sent shows that there is an elevator going up nearly to the top. While visitors might require a harness to enter certain parts of the structure, the same can likely be said for workers who go up spires of certain skyscrapers. I don't think that excludes this from being a building in US law (Ukraine law may differ). Beyond that, being able to enter the figural part of the building is likely to be sufficient but not necessary to consider a building's sculptural ornamentation as allowable under freedom of panorama in the US. The relevant case law is Leicester vs. Warner Bros. There are several cases previously where a building with sculptural exterior elements have been kept after discussion both on Wikimedia Commons and English Wikipedia. Restore my file immediately. — Ирука13 07:55, 3 January 2026 (UTC)
- I uploaded the file under the original file name to maintain continuity with the original file name on Wikimedia Commons. There is no need to have two copies of the same file. It was validly deleted under speedy deletion criteria F1. IronGargoyle (talk) 19:11, 4 January 2026 (UTC)
- It is not. You deleted the "original" as a "copy." "to maintain continuity with the original file name" is an invalid reason; renaming is what it's for. Would it be okay if we deleted articles instead of renaming them? I believe you acted unethically and violated the rules for using the administrator tools. — Ирука13 08:42, 5 January 2026 (UTC)
- This is the most ridiculous case of wikilawyering I've seen in a while. Are you upset that you didn't get credit for blurring the image? It was a helpful edit, thank you. You're welcome to give yourself credit, though it certainly wasn't a creative work that would attract new copyright or entitle you to attribution. Edit the image description and give yourself credit for blurring a rectangle. I don't care. Just please knock off this nonsense about ethics and misuse of administrator tools.
