GA mentorship (remember me?)

So I just finished reading the GA criteria and instructions, and I think I got the gist of the process. Would you really be willing to help and guide me with my first review(s)? Someone who likes train writing (talk) 16:40, 10 June 2026 (UTC)

@Someone who likes train writing yes definitely! Feel free to start a review of your choosing and let me know where it is IAWW (talk) 07:11, 11 June 2026 (UTC)
@It is a wonderful world Alright, so I decided that my first GA review would be for A Bad Night (song). It appears to have been nominated once before but was quick failed for not passing the New page patrol, and the nominator likely wanted to try again. I have to attend at my job later today, so I won't be able to begin thoroughly looking until later tonight, but when I do, I'll be using one or two of my previous nominations as reference, and any input from you would be highly appreciated. Someone who likes train writing (talk) 17:52, 11 June 2026 (UTC)
Great! I've sent a quick message at the review, but I'll be hands-off until the end of the review unless you have any questions, in which case just ping me or reply. When the review has reached its conclusion, I'll take a second look over the article and see if there's anything noteworthy you missed. Thank you for actually reading the criteria and instructions (you'd be surprised how many don't). That will set you up well! IAWW (talk) 20:26, 11 June 2026 (UTC)
@It is a wonderful world I just finished looking over the article, and I checked almost all the boxes. Since you're mentoring me, and I'm still new to this, I'm letting you know now before I promote. Someone who likes train writing (talk) 04:59, 14 June 2026 (UTC)
Great! I will take a look tomorrow as I'm busy today at work :) IAWW (talk) 05:16, 14 June 2026 (UTC)
@Someone who likes train writing, this was a very good choice for a first review as it was nice and straightforward. If you want to do another review, I suggest picking a more challenging one if you want to continue developing your skills. I'm happy to keep mentoring as long as you please. IAWW (talk) 21:56, 15 June 2026 (UTC)
Alright, I just clicked start review for Christopher Eccleston, a biography page that's over 4,000 words long. Feel free to leave any tips about this category, if you please. Someone who likes train writing (talk) 01:50, 18 June 2026 (UTC)
That's quite the project! Good luck. As before, feel free to ping me if you want/need any help and before the review concludes :) IAWW (talk) 23:25, 19 June 2026 (UTC)
@It is a wonderful world So I'm almost done with this current GA review, and I will look over the page more closely for more grammar to correct (as you advised last time), but before I proceed, would you like to look over the review and see how I did so far? I was thinking of asking for a second opinion on this one. Someone who likes train writing (talk) 07:23, 23 June 2026 (UTC)
Hi @Someone who likes train writing, I took a look at the article and review and left my feedback there. Feel free to ping me for second opinions in the future rather than going through the formal process, because often you'll be waiting a very long time for a response doing it that way. Also generally you should only ask for a second opinion if you have a specific area/point you want a second opinion on, rather than for a whole review/broad check. Overall this was another strong nomination, and you didn't miss any major issues. Well done for getting through such a long one! IAWW (talk) 11:02, 23 June 2026 (UTC)
@It is a wonderful world Since you recommended I find a GA nominee that could fail its review, so I started the review of Michael McStay, another English actor. I'm at work at the moment, so I'll have to look closer at it a little bit later, but so far, for a biography about someone labeled as "mid-importance", it doesn't look broad enough in it's coverage. Someone who likes train writing (talk) 01:00, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
@It is a wonderful world I'm just about finished looking over that article, and before I finish off the review, would you like to look it over and see if I missed anything? This is the review. Someone who likes train writing (talk) 05:39, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
Hi @Someone who likes train writing, I left some comments at that review. Feel free to ping me again whenever if you want more feedback. Thank you for reviewing and helping shred the backlog! IAWW (talk) 10:24, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
@It is a wonderful world I can't thank you enough for showing me some of the ropes of how this reviewing process works. It does feel good helping trim down the backlog a little bit. Now I do have a couple of GA-related favors to ask, but only one at a time. I don't know which GA nominee you're reviewing next, but do you think you could look over my current pending page at one point? Maybe as further teachings on which types of sources to use or not use? Someone who likes train writing (talk) 23:43, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
Hi @Someone who likes train writing, it's been a pleasure.I will try and review that at some point. I unfortunately can't promise it'll be soon, as I'm super busy IRL, with writing Butterfly stroke, and with answering mentorship requests that don't seem to get answered if I don't. On a quick look over, the sourcing seems strong, with lots of use of reliable books. IAWW (talk) 12:42, 9 July 2026 (UTC)

GA Mentorship

Hello IAWW! I'm currently on vacation in Japan (lovely country!) so I won't be very active at all, but once I'm back in four days I'll have time to do my first GA review. Thanks for offering to mentor me! In the meantime, do you have any advice for a newcomer to the process that isn't listed on WP:GA? Thanks, Gracen (they/she) 01:05, 29 June 2026 (UTC)

Hi @Gracen, that sounds wonderful! Enjoy your time there. I suggest reading TBUA's Good article reviewing guide before and during your review. I think it's better/more in-depth than most of the official guidance. IAWW (talk) 10:54, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
Oh, I read that already! It's linked from the official docs. Thanks anyways, glad to hear it's good advice. Also thanks for the well wishes; it's been lovely so far! Gracen (they/she) 23:56, 29 June 2026 (UTC)

Questions for GA newbies?

Hey IAWW (and any talk page watchers), I am looking to put some questions together that can be asked of GA newbies. The goal is to use their answers to assess the current GA process and see ways in which it can be made more friendly. The broad structure I'm currently thinking is:

  • How did you hear about GA?
  • What made you decide to do a review?
  • How did you pick which article to review?
  • How long did you spend before your review going over the instructions and guides before starting your review?
  • How would you describe your experience of completing the review?
  • What did you like / dislike about the way GA is set up?
  • Do you have any plans to do another GA review?

And maybe some demographics information:

  • When did you first register?
  • How many edits do you have?
  • Have you nominated an article to GA before? Any luck?

Alternatively, there could just be a broad question rather than discrete ones: "can you describe your experience of GA?".

What do you think? Anything that should be added, changed, etc? Do you think it's worthwhile asking this at WT:GA for input, or would getting mired in consensus processes become a timesink, with momentum better retained by saying "we have asked questions of new reviewers, here's a summary of what was found"? Grateful for any thoughts. Whonting (talk) 04:41, 6 July 2026 (UTC)

This would be interesting and useful. Most the questions would be good I think – I think the more closed questions would be more useful. I do think it should be brought up at WT:GA if it is to be done systematically/en masse. Surely the demographics information could just be found by looking at the accounts? Unless you plan to do this anonymously?
On a related but different note, you might find it interesting to look at the at the GA mentorship archives and what the mentees went on to do – it seems those that got grass roots attention from an experienced editor were much more likely to be productive within the system themselves. I've noticed there seems to be a lack of attention at the mentorship page from experienced editors unfortunately, and I think that's the biggest simple area the process could improve. IAWW (talk) 14:11, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
I think you're right on the assent to mass posting angle and will bring that there shortly. The demographics information could be checked off, but some fuzzier questions like "when did you start editing" won't necessarily align with registration dates. The GA Mentor stuff is interesting. Depending on how the answers go, I may go with your idea and have a look at comparing those who had mentorship with those who didn't. Whonting (talk) 23:33, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
