Copyvio advice
Hey Nthep, saw you declined the revdel requests at barm and barm cake. I understood that the majority of the source being copied into Wikipedia would fall awry of WP:COPYQUOTE, which prohibits a "substantial portion" being quoted. Do you not think this was a significant portion, or do you have any advice to offer for when it is appropriate to request revdel for excessive quotations? Whonting (talk) 05:53, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Whonting it's a balancing act. I agree that WP:COPYQUOTE is entirely applicable in this case and I think you were entirely correct in removing an excessive quotation. However WP:REVDEL says that copyright violations should only be applied when there is a blatant breach of copyright. Here there was no attempt to pass the quote of as original work, indeed it was fully cited, so it wasn't blatant in that respect. The amount of disruption caused to the article history also has to be considered. If I had applied revdel, that would be three years worth of revisions affected to barm and nine years worth to barm cake. In itself neither is a massive amount but still something to be considered. If either was revdel of a single edit I might have decided differently but looking at various factors I didn't think revdel was appropriate on these occasions. It was borderline though.
- I'd say it is always appropriate to tag an article for revdel if you think it's applicable, the worst possible case is that the reviewing admin doesn't agree. At least it's had two sets of eyes look at it. That's a better worst possible case than not asking. Nthep (talk) 06:52, 28 June 2026 (UTC)
