BRD is not a policy

Hello Russ Woodroofe,

when you deal with disputed content, please don't refer to BRD as if it was a policy justifying reverts. Disputed content can be removed and needs to stay removed until a consensus is found; actual policy sections mandating this are WP:BLPRESTORE, WP:ONUS and WP:BURDEN. There is no special protection for "stable" revisions; consensus formed through editing alone ends in the moment there is a dispute (cf. Wikipedia:Consensus § Through editing). Without talk page consensus, it would be inappropriate to restore disputed material just because it had been in the article for a long time. So in the case of the article about John Petrucci, policy was on your side, but that has nothing to do with the "BRD" essay. Forcibly restoring stable revisions just because they're stable is an action limited to administrators when protecting pages (WP:PREFER) and not something justified by any other policy.

@ToBeFree: yes, my edit summaries weren't completely ideal. I think I was basically doing things for the right reasons, but UNDUE (which I did refer to the first time around) and ONUS are better things to refer to. The BRD essay does at least have the advantage that it directs a user to engage at the talk page in a pretty clear way. I probably wouldn't have reverted at all, and certainly not a second time (even after the delay) without the policy-based talk page consensus. Russ Woodroofe (talk) 09:15, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

All good, I'm not concerned about the removal; I was just nitpicking at the edit summary. To me personally, it would have been an enforcement of BLPRESTORE and exempt through WP:3RRNO #7 even if you had made ten reverts there. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 09:55, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

On Anthony Liekens

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but i have an article from tscheld (https://www.tscheldt.be/tag/anthony-liekens/) that explicitly mentions his name and shares same details with articles wich are more reliable sources would you accept this as a proper connection or is the validity of tscheld as a source not good enough. The HLN article specifically mentions Anthony L. who is part of the show Team Scheire. After checking the sources on the wikipedia article about Team Scheire there seems to be only one person part of this show whos name could be written as Anthony Liekens. Would this suffice? ^[1]

I agree that in a better world, the assault would be covered in the Wikipedia article, and I spent a fair bit of time looking for useable sources when it was discussed at WP:BLPN (see WP:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard/Archive352#Anthony Liekens). I was not the only one, and none of us succeeded. In particular, while "Anthony L." with the minimally blurred out photo seems to be giving a nod and a wink, the discussion determined that it wasn't enough for Wikipedia's BLP standards. I and others found a version of the TScheldt piece, but that also didn't pass muster as appearing in a satire magazine. I'm not proficient in any of Belgium's languages OTOH: though I'm highly experienced in finding sources in situations like these, it is possible that I and others all missed stuff. We'd need an article in a major newspaper that both directly names Liekens and also describes the case. I am sorry not to have better news here. Russ Woodroofe (talk) 22:00, 29 July 2026 (UTC)

Ironclad reference

If you wish, my best advice would be to re-raise it at WP:BLPN, the Biography of Living Persons Noticeboard. It would likely be a good idea to register an account, and say who you are. People will certainly listen to you. As to whether it makes a difference in the consensus, I am a bit pessimistic. I think the article on TScheldt is your best case here, and the thing to do is to say why this particular article on an outlet known for its satire should be taken literally. Hln is probably no good, as it doesn't mention Liekens by name (yes, it's obvious that it is him, but this requires original research). More broadly, if you want something covered on Wikipedia, the best thing to do would be to get it covered in reliable sources in the Belgian or wider news media. (That is good advice about advancing a cause, anyway.) As I say, I spent a fair bit of time looking for sources at the time without luck, but speaking French and/or Flemish is surely an advantage. I am somewhat supportive, but I also take Wikipedia's BLP rules seriously -- if Wikipedia is sued out of existence, or blocked in Belgium, then it doesn't do anyone any good. Please let me know if you do want to raise at BLPN, and I will try to help around the outside (though I am pretty busy with eldercare issues at the moment), or even raise it there (briefly) myself. no, I'm willing to provide the public verdict of the court privately to everyone who thinks there is not enough "ironclad evidence" and reverts changes. This is a moral issue. Either you accept that a public figure criminal record is enough to not revert actual facts while preserving the privacy of a not public figure victim.
